Torches were blazing clearA
Hymns pealing deep and slowB
Where a king lay stately on his bierC
In the church of FontevraudD
Banners of battle o'er him hungE
And warriors slept beneathF
And light as Noon's broad light was flungE
On the settled face of deathG
-
On the settled face of deathG
A strong and ruddy glareH
Through dimm'd at times by the censer's breathG
Yet it fell still brightest thereH
As if each deeply furrow'd traceI
Of earthly years to showB
Alas that sceptred mortal's raceI
Had surely clos'd in woeB
-
The marble floor was sweptD
By many a long dark stoleJ
As the kneeling priests round him that sleptD
Sang mass for the parted soulJ
And solemn were the strains they pour'dD
Through the stillness of the nightD
With the cross above and the crown and swordD
And the silent king in sightD
-
There was heard a heavy clangK
As of steel girt men the treadD
And the tombs and the hollow pavement rangK
With a sounding thrill of dreadD
And the holy chant was hush'd awhileL
As by the torch's flameM
A gleam of arms up the sweeping aisleL
With a mail clad leader cameM
-
He came with haughty lookN
An eagle glance and clearA
But his proud heart through its breast plate shookN
When he stood beside the bierC
He stood there still with a drooping browO
And clasp'd hands o'er it rais'dD
For his father lay before him lowB
It was Coeur de Lion gazedD
-
And silently he stroveP
With the workings of his breastD
But there's more in late repentant loveQ
Than steel may keep suppress'dD
And his tears brake forth at last like rainR
Men held their breath in aweS
For his face was seen by his warrior trainR
And he reck'd not that they sawT
-
He look'd upon the deadD
And sorrow seem'd to lieU
A weight of sorrow ev'n like leadD
Pale on the fast shut eyeU
He stoop'd and kiss'd the frozen cheekV
And the heavy hand of clayW
Till bursting words yet all too weakV
Gave his soul's passion wayW
-
'Oh father is it vainR
This late remorse and deepX
Speak to me father once againY
I weep behold I weepX
Alas my guilty pride and ireZ
Were but this work undoneA2
I would give England's crown my sireB2
To hear thee bless thy sonA2
-
'Speak to me mighty griefC2
Ere now the dust hath stirr'dD
Hear me but hear me father chiefC2
My king I must be heardD
Hush'd hush'd how is it that I callD2
And that thou answerest notD
When was it thus woe woe for allD2
The love my soul forgotD
-
'Thy silver hairs I seeE2
So still so sadly brightD
And father father but for meE2
They had not been so whiteD
I bore thee down high heart at lastD
No longer couldst thou striveF2
Oh for one moment of the pastD
To kneel and say 'forgive '-
-
'Thou wert the noblest kingG2
On royal throne e'er seenH2
And thou didst wear in knightly ringG2
Of all the stateliest mienH2
And thou didst prove where spears are prov'dD
In war the bravest heartD
Oh ever the renown'd and lov'dD
Thou wert and there thou artD
-
'Thou that my boyhood's guideD
Didst take fond joy to beE2
The times I've sported at thy sideD
And climb'd thy parent kneeE2
And there before the blessed shrineI2
My sire I see thee lieU
How will that sad still face of thineI2
Look on me till I die '-
