'TWAS but a dream I saw the stag leap free | E |
Under the boughs where early birds were singing | F |
I stood o'ershadowed by the greenwood tree | E |
And heard it seemed a sudden bugle ringing | F |
Far thro' a royal forest then the fawn | G |
Shot like a gleam of light from grassy lawn | G |
To secret covert and the smooth turf shook | H |
And lilies quiver'd by the glade's lone brook | H |
- | |
And young leaves trembled as in fleet career | I |
A princely band with horn and hound and spear | I |
Like a rich masque swept forth I saw the dance | J |
Of their white plumes that bore a silvery glance | J |
Into the deep wood's heart and all pass'd by | - |
Save one I met the smile of one clear eye | - |
Flashing out joy to mine Yes thou wert there | K |
Seymour a soft wind blew the clustering hair | K |
Back from thy gallant brow as thou didst rein | A |
Thy courser turning from that gorgeous train | A |
And fling methought thy hunting spear away | L |
And lightly graceful in thy green array | L |
Bound to my side and we that met and parted | D |
Ever in dread of some dark watchful power | M |
Won back to childhood's trust and fearless hearted | D |
Blent the glad fulness of our thoughts that hour | M |
Even like the mingling of sweet streams beneath | N |
Dim woven leaves and midst the floating breath | O |
Of hidden forest flowers | P |

'Tis past I wake | Q |
A captive and alone and far from thee | E |
My love and friend Yet fostering for thy sake | Q |
A quenchless hope of happiness to be | E |
And feeling still my woman's spirit strong | R |
In the deep faith which lifts from earthly wrong | R |
A heavenward glance I know I know our love | S |
Shall yet call gentle angels from above | S |
By its undying fervour and prevail | T |
Sending a breath as of the spring's first gale | T |
Thro' hearts now cold and raising its bright face | U |
With a free gush of sunny tears erase | U |
The characters of anguish In this trust | D |
I bear I strive I bow not to the dust | D |
That I may bring thee back no faded form | V |
No bosom chill'd and blighted by the storm | V |
But all my youth's first treasures when we meet | D |
Making past sorrow by communion sweet | D |

And thou too art in bonds yet droop thou not | D |
Oh my belov'd there is one hopeless lot | D |
But one and that not ours Beside the dead | D |
There sits the grief that mantles up its head | D |
Loathing the laughter and proud pomp of light | D |
When darkness from the vainly doting sight | D |
Covers its beautiful If thou wert gone | G |
To the grave's bosom with thy radiant brow | W |
If thy deep thrilling voice with that low tone | X |
Of earnest tenderness which now ev'n now | W |
Seems floating thro' my soul were music taken | C |
For ever from this world oh thus forsaken | C |
Could I bear on thou liv'st thou liv'st thou'rt mine | Y |
With this glad thought I make my heart a shrine | Y |
And by the lamp which quenchless there shall burn | Z |
Sit a lone watcher for the day's return | Z |

IV | S |

And lo the joy that cometh with the morning | F |
Brightly victorious o'er the hours of care | K |
I have not watch'd in vain serenely scorning | F |
The wild and busy whispers of despair | K |
Thou hast sent tidings as of heaven I wait | D |
The hour the sign for blessed flight to thee | E |
Oh for the skylark's wing that seeks its mate | D |
As a star shoots but on the breezy sea | E |
We shall meet soon To think of such an hour | M |
Will not my heart o'erburdened by its bliss | A2 |
Faint and give way within me as a flower | M |
Borne down and perishing by noontide's kiss | A2 |
Yet shall I fear that lot the perfect rest | D |
The full deep joy of dying on thy breast | D |
After long suffering won So rich a close | B2 |
Too seldom crowns with peace affection's woes | C2 |

Sunset I tell each moment from the skies | D2 |
The last red splendour floats along my wall | E2 |
Like a king's banner Now it melts it dies | D2 |
I see one star I hear 'twas not the call | E2 |
Th' expected voice my quick heart throbb'd too soon | F2 |
I must keep vigil till yon rising moon | F2 |
Shower down less golden light Beneath her beam | G2 |
Thro' my lone lattice pour'd I sit and dream | G2 |
Of summer lands afar where holy love | S |
Under the vine or in the citron grove | S |
May breathe from terror | M |
Now the night grows deep | H2 |
And silent as its clouds and full of sleep | H2 |
I hear my veins beat Hark a bell's slow chime | I2 |
My heart strikes with it Yet again 'tis time | I2 |
A step a voice or but a rising breeze | J2 |
Hark haste I come to meet thee on the seas | J2 |

VI | S |

Now never more oh never in the worth | K2 |
Of its pure cause let sorrowing love on earth | K2 |
Trust fondly never more the hope is crush'd | D |
That lit my life the voice within me hush'd | D |
That spoke sweet oracles and I return | Z |
To lay my youth as in a burial urn | Z |
Where sunshine may not find it All is lost | D |
No tempest met our barks no billow toss'd | D |
Yet were they sever'd ev'n as we must be | E |
That so have lov'd so striven our hearts to free | E |
From their close coiling fate In vain in vain | A |
The dark links meet and clasp themselves again | L2 |
And press out life Upon the deck I stood | D |
And a white sail came gliding o'er the flood | D |
Like some proud bird of ocean then mine eye | S |
Strained out one moment earlier to descry | E |
The form it ached for and the bark's career | E |
Seem'd slow to that fond yearning it drew near | E |
- | |
- | |
Fraught with our foes What boots it to recall | E2 |
The strife the tears Once more a prison wall | E2 |
Shuts the green hills and woodlands from my sight | D |
And joyous glance of waters to the light | D |
And thee my Seymour thee | E |
- | |
I will not sink | F |
Thou thou hast rent the heavy chain that bound thee | E |
And this shall be my strength the joy to think | F |
That thou mayst wander with heaven's breath around thee | E |
And all the laughing sky This thought shall yet | D |
Shine o'er my heart a radiant amulet | D |
Guarding it from despair Thy bonds are broken | C |
And unto me I know thy true love's token | C |
Shall one day be deliverance tho' the years | M2 |
Lie dim between o'erhung with mists of tears | N2 |

My friend my friend where art thou Day by day | L |
Gliding like some dark mournful stream away | L |
My silent youth flows from me Spring the while | O2 |
Comes and rains beauty on the kindling boughs | P2 |
Round hall and hamlet Summer with her smile | O2 |
Fills the green forest young hearts breathe their vows | P2 |
Brothers long parted meet fair children rise | D2 |
Round the glad board Hope laughs from loving eyes | D2 |
All this is in the world These joys lie sown | X |
The dew of every path On one alone | X |
Their freshness may not fall the stricken deer | E |
Dying of thirst with all the waters near | E |

VIII | S |
- | |
Ye are from dingle and fresh glade ye flowers | P |
By some kind hand to cheer my dungeon sent | D |
O'er you the oak shed down the summer showers | P |
And the lark's nest was where your bright cups bent | D |
- | |
Quivering to breeze and rain drop like the sheen | Q2 |
Of twilight stars On you Heaven's eye hath been | R2 |
Thro' the leaves pouring its dark sultry bIue | E |
Into your glowing hearts the bee to you | S2 |
Hath murmur'd and the rill My soul grows faint | D |
With passionate yearning as its quick dreams paint | D |
Your haunts by dell and stream the green the free | E |
The full of all sweet sound the shut from me | E |
- | |
IX | P |
- | |
There went a swift bird singing past my cell | T2 |
O Love and Freedom ye are lovely things | P |
With you the peasant on the hills may dwell | T2 |
And by the streams but I the blood of kings | P |
A proud unmingling river thro' my veins | P |
Flows in lone brightness and its gifts are chains | P |
Kings I had silent visions of deep bliss | P |
Leaving their thrones far distant and for this | P |
- | |
I am cast under their triumphal car | E |
An insect to be crushed Oh Heaven is far | E |
Earth pitiless | P |
- | |
Dost thou forget me Seymour I am prov'd | D |
So long so sternly Seymour my belov'd | D |
There are such tales of holy marvels done | C |
By strong affection of deliverance won | C |
Thro' its prevailing power Are these things told | D |
