And is not love in vainA
Torture enough without a living tombB

'TWAS but a dream I saw the stag leap freeE
Under the boughs where early birds were singingF
I stood o'ershadowed by the greenwood treeE
And heard it seemed a sudden bugle ringingF
Far thro' a royal forest then the fawnG
Shot like a gleam of light from grassy lawnG
To secret covert and the smooth turf shookH
And lilies quiver'd by the glade's lone brookH
-
And young leaves trembled as in fleet careerI
A princely band with horn and hound and spearI
Like a rich masque swept forth I saw the danceJ
Of their white plumes that bore a silvery glanceJ
Into the deep wood's heart and all pass'd by-
Save one I met the smile of one clear eye-
Flashing out joy to mine Yes thou wert thereK
Seymour a soft wind blew the clustering hairK
Back from thy gallant brow as thou didst reinA
Thy courser turning from that gorgeous trainA
And fling methought thy hunting spear awayL
And lightly graceful in thy green arrayL
Bound to my side and we that met and partedD
Ever in dread of some dark watchful powerM
Won back to childhood's trust and fearless heartedD
Blent the glad fulness of our thoughts that hourM
Even like the mingling of sweet streams beneathN
Dim woven leaves and midst the floating breathO
Of hidden forest flowersP

'Tis past I wakeQ
A captive and alone and far from theeE
My love and friend Yet fostering for thy sakeQ
A quenchless hope of happiness to beE
And feeling still my woman's spirit strongR
In the deep faith which lifts from earthly wrongR
A heavenward glance I know I know our loveS
Shall yet call gentle angels from aboveS
By its undying fervour and prevailT
Sending a breath as of the spring's first galeT
Thro' hearts now cold and raising its bright faceU
With a free gush of sunny tears eraseU
The characters of anguish In this trustD
I bear I strive I bow not to the dustD
That I may bring thee back no faded formV
No bosom chill'd and blighted by the stormV
But all my youth's first treasures when we meetD
Making past sorrow by communion sweetD

And thou too art in bonds yet droop thou notD
Oh my belov'd there is one hopeless lotD
But one and that not ours Beside the deadD
There sits the grief that mantles up its headD
Loathing the laughter and proud pomp of lightD
When darkness from the vainly doting sightD
Covers its beautiful If thou wert goneG
To the grave's bosom with thy radiant browW
If thy deep thrilling voice with that low toneX
Of earnest tenderness which now ev'n nowW
Seems floating thro' my soul were music takenC
For ever from this world oh thus forsakenC
Could I bear on thou liv'st thou liv'st thou'rt mineY
With this glad thought I make my heart a shrineY
And by the lamp which quenchless there shall burnZ
Sit a lone watcher for the day's returnZ

And lo the joy that cometh with the morningF
Brightly victorious o'er the hours of careK
I have not watch'd in vain serenely scorningF
The wild and busy whispers of despairK
Thou hast sent tidings as of heaven I waitD
The hour the sign for blessed flight to theeE
Oh for the skylark's wing that seeks its mateD
As a star shoots but on the breezy seaE
We shall meet soon To think of such an hourM
Will not my heart o'erburdened by its blissA2
Faint and give way within me as a flowerM
Borne down and perishing by noontide's kissA2
Yet shall I fear that lot the perfect restD
The full deep joy of dying on thy breastD
After long suffering won So rich a closeB2
Too seldom crowns with peace affection's woesC2

Sunset I tell each moment from the skiesD2
The last red splendour floats along my wallE2
Like a king's banner Now it melts it diesD2
I see one star I hear 'twas not the callE2
Th' expected voice my quick heart throbb'd too soonF2
I must keep vigil till yon rising moonF2
Shower down less golden light Beneath her beamG2
Thro' my lone lattice pour'd I sit and dreamG2
Of summer lands afar where holy loveS
Under the vine or in the citron groveS
May breathe from terrorM
Now the night grows deepH2
And silent as its clouds and full of sleepH2
I hear my veins beat Hark a bell's slow chimeI2
My heart strikes with it Yet again 'tis timeI2
A step a voice or but a rising breezeJ2
Hark haste I come to meet thee on the seasJ2

Now never more oh never in the worthK2
Of its pure cause let sorrowing love on earthK2
Trust fondly never more the hope is crush'dD
That lit my life the voice within me hush'dD
That spoke sweet oracles and I returnZ
To lay my youth as in a burial urnZ
Where sunshine may not find it All is lostD
No tempest met our barks no billow toss'dD
Yet were they sever'd ev'n as we must beE
That so have lov'd so striven our hearts to freeE
From their close coiling fate In vain in vainA
The dark links meet and clasp themselves againL2
And press out life Upon the deck I stoodD
And a white sail came gliding o'er the floodD
Like some proud bird of ocean then mine eyeS
Strained out one moment earlier to descryE
The form it ached for and the bark's careerE
Seem'd slow to that fond yearning it drew nearE
-
-
Fraught with our foes What boots it to recallE2
The strife the tears Once more a prison wallE2
Shuts the green hills and woodlands from my sightD
And joyous glance of waters to the lightD
And thee my Seymour theeE
-
I will not sinkF
Thou thou hast rent the heavy chain that bound theeE
And this shall be my strength the joy to thinkF
That thou mayst wander with heaven's breath around theeE
And all the laughing sky This thought shall yetD
Shine o'er my heart a radiant amuletD
Guarding it from despair Thy bonds are brokenC
And unto me I know thy true love's tokenC
Shall one day be deliverance tho' the yearsM2
Lie dim between o'erhung with mists of tearsN2

My friend my friend where art thou Day by dayL
Gliding like some dark mournful stream awayL
My silent youth flows from me Spring the whileO2
Comes and rains beauty on the kindling boughsP2
Round hall and hamlet Summer with her smileO2
Fills the green forest young hearts breathe their vowsP2
Brothers long parted meet fair children riseD2
Round the glad board Hope laughs from loving eyesD2
All this is in the world These joys lie sownX
The dew of every path On one aloneX
Their freshness may not fall the stricken deerE
Dying of thirst with all the waters nearE

-
Ye are from dingle and fresh glade ye flowersP
By some kind hand to cheer my dungeon sentD
O'er you the oak shed down the summer showersP
And the lark's nest was where your bright cups bentD
-
Quivering to breeze and rain drop like the sheenQ2
Of twilight stars On you Heaven's eye hath beenR2
Thro' the leaves pouring its dark sultry bIueE
Into your glowing hearts the bee to youS2
Hath murmur'd and the rill My soul grows faintD
With passionate yearning as its quick dreams paintD
Your haunts by dell and stream the green the freeE
The full of all sweet sound the shut from meE
-
IXP
-
There went a swift bird singing past my cellT2
O Love and Freedom ye are lovely thingsP
With you the peasant on the hills may dwellT2
And by the streams but I the blood of kingsP
A proud unmingling river thro' my veinsP
Flows in lone brightness and its gifts are chainsP
Kings I had silent visions of deep blissP
Leaving their thrones far distant and for thisP
-
I am cast under their triumphal carE
An insect to be crushed Oh Heaven is farE
Earth pitilessP
-
Dost thou forget me Seymour I am prov'dD
So long so sternly Seymour my belov'dD
There are such tales of holy marvels doneC
By strong affection of deliverance wonC
Thro' its prevailing power Are these things toldD
