OH thou the musing wakeful pow'rA
That lov'st the silent midnight hourB
Thy lonely vigils then to keepC
And banish far the angel sleepC
With all his lovely trainD
Come pensive thought with thee I'll roveE
Through forest wild sequestered groveE
Or twilight plainD
-
The lone recluse in hermit cellF
With thee oh nymph delights to dwellF
Forsakes the world and all its charmsG
Forsakes the syren pleasure's armsG
In peaceful shades to restH
And oft with thee entranc'd may hearI
Celestial voices warbling nearJ
Of spirits blestH
-
When slow declines the rosy dayK
And ev'ning smiles with parting rayK
When twilight spreads her magic huesL
When moon beams tremble on the dewsL
Be mine to rove retir'dM
By fairy bower or dimpled streamN
To muse with thee some heavenly themeN
Oh maid inspir'dO
-
'Tis thine on eagle wings to soarP
Unknown unfathom'd realms exploreP
Below the deeps above the skyQ
Beyond the starry orbs on highQ
Can aught restrain thy flightR
To pierce the veil of future timeS
And rise in Fancy's car sublimeS
To realms of lightR
-
At midnight to the guilty breastH
Thou com'st a fear'd appalling guestH
While lightnings flash and thunders rollT
Accusing conscience wakes the soulT
And bids each fear increaseU
And while benignant slumber fliesV
With awful voice in whisper criesV
Farewell to peaceU
-
But oh dread pow'r how sweet thy reignD
To Virtue's mild and hallow'd trainD
The storm around may wildly raveW
And winter swell the mountain waveW
Yet soft their calm reposeX
Their minds unruffled and sereneY
And guardian seraphs watch unseenY
Their eyes to closeZ
