His very heart athirstA
To gaze at nature in her green arrayB
Upon the ship's tall side he stands possess'dA
With visions prompted by intense desireC
Fair fields appear below such as he leftA
Far distant such as he would die to findA
He seeks them headlong and is seen no more CowperC
-
-
The hollow dash of waves the ceaseless roarD
Silence ye billows vex my soul no moreD
-
There's a spring in the woods by my sunny homeE
Afar from the dark sea's tossing foamE
Oh the fall of that fountain is sweet to hearF
As a song from the shore to the sailor's earF
-
And the sparkle which up to the sun it throwsG
Thro' the feathery fern and the olive boughsH
And the gleam on its path as it steals awayB
Into deeper shades from the sultry dayB
And the large water lilies that o'er its bedA
Their pearly leaves to the soft light spreadA
They haunt me I dream of that bright spring's flowI
I thirst for its rills like a wounded roeI
-
Be still thou sea bird with thy clanging cryJ
My spirit sickens as thy wing sweeps byJ
-
Know ye my home with the lulling soundA
Of leaves from the lime and the chestnut roundA
Know ye it brethren where bower'd it liesK
Under the purple of southern skiesK
With the streamy gold of the sun that shinesL
In thro' the cloud of its clustering vinesL
And the summer breath of the myrtle flowersM
Borne from the mountain in dewy hoursM
And the fire fly's glance thro' the dark'ning shadesN
Like shooting stars in the forest gladesN
And the scent of the citron at eve's dim fallO
Speak have ye known have ye felt them allO
-
The heavy rolling surge the rocking mastA
Hush give my dream's deep music way thou blastA
-
Oh the glad sounds of the joyous earthP
The notes of the singing cicala's mirthP
The murmurs that live in the mountain pinesL
The sighing of reeds as the day declinesL
The wings flitting home thro' the crimson glowI
That steeps the wood when the sun is lowI
The voice of the night bird that sends a thrillQ
To the heart of the leaves when the winds are stillQ
I hear them round me they rise they swellR
They call back my spirit with Hope to dwellR
They come with a breath from the fresh spring timeS
And waken my youth in its hour of primeS
-
The white foam dashes high away awayB
Shroud my green land no more thou blinding sprayB
-
It is there down the mountains I see the sweepT
Of the chestnut forests the rich and deepT
With the burden and glory of flowers that they bearU
Floating upborne on the blue summer airU
And the light pouring thro' them in tender gleamsV
And the flashing forth of a thousand streamsV
Hold me not brethren I go I goI
To the hills of my youth where the myrtles blowI
To the depths of the woods where the shadows restA
Massy and still on the greensward's breastA
To the rocks that resound with the water's playB
I hear the sweet laugh of my fount give wayB
-
Give way the booming surge the tempest's roarD
The sea bird's wail shall vex my soul no moreD
