Kung walkedA
by the dynastic templeB
and into the cedar groveC
and then out by the lower riverD
And with him Khieu TchiE
and Tian the low speakingF
And we are unknown said KungG
You will take up charioteeringG
Then you will become knownH
Or perhaps I should take up charioterring or archeryI
Or the practice of public speaking ''J
And Tseu lou said I would put the defences in order ''J
And Khieu said If I were lord of a provinceK
I would put it in better order than this is ''J
And Tchi said I would prefer a small mountain templeB
With order in the observancesL
with a suitable performance of the ritual ''J
And Tian said with his hand on the strings of his luteM
The low sounds continuingG
after his hand left the stringsN
And the sound went up like smoke under the leavesO
And he looked after the soundP
The old swimming holeQ
And the boys flopping off the planksR
Or sitting in the underbrush playing mandolins ''J
And Kung smiled upon all of them equallyI
And Thseng sie desired to knowS
Which had answered correctly ''J
And Kung said They have all answered correctlyI
That is to say each in his nature ''J
And Kung raised his cane against Yuan JangG
Yuan Jang being his elderD
For Yuan Jang sat by the roadside pretending toT
be receiving wisdomU
And Kung saidV
You old fool come out of itW
Get up and do something useful ''J
And Kung saidV
Respect a child's facultiesX
From the moment it inhales the clear airY
But a man of fifty who knows nothngG
Is worthy of no respect ''J
And When the prince has gathered about himZ
All the savants and artists his riches will be fully employed ''J
And Kung said and wrote on the bo leavesO
If a man have not order within himZ
He can not spread order about himZ
And if a man have not order within himZ
His family will not act with due orderD
And if the prince have not order within himZ
He can not put order in his dominionsO
And Kung gave the words order''D
and brotherly deference''O
And said nothing of the life after death ''J
And he saidV
Anyone can run to excessesO
It is easy to shoot past the markG
It is hard to stand firm in the middle ''J
-
And they said If a man commit murderD
Should his father protect him and hide himZ
And Kung saidV
He should hide himZ
-
And Kung gave his daughter to Kong TchangG
Although Kong Tchang was in prisonA2
And he gave his niece to Nan YoungG
although Nan Young was out of officeO
And Kung said Wan ruled with moderationA2
In his day the State was well keptB2
And even I can rememberD
A day when the historians left blanks in their writingsO
I mean for things they didn't knowS
But that time seems to be passingG
A day when the historians left blanks in their writingsO
But that time seems to be passing ''-
And Kung said Without character you willC2
be unable to play on that instrumentD2
Or to execute the music fit for the OdesO
The blossoms of the apricotE2
blow from the east to the westF2
And I have tried to keep them from fallingG
