Rhyme Scheme: ABC DEDF GHIJ KLM NOPG QRST UVW XJBY MXG

i cop a squat on a squared off logA
to watch you ball on the community center courtB
butt numb i shift my weightC
-
and shake mosquitos from my anklesD
but never take my eyes off the gameE
yours follow the orange orb your pupilsD
twin brown moons reflecting its lightF
-
your play is wild efficiencyG
you are a four pronged magic wandH
waving as if agentless in all directions at onceI
an opponent dribbles the ball now he sees itJ
-
now he don't it's gone flownK
and you've given it its wingsL
you are one eighth of the shrieking rubberM
-
one eighth of the growls and calls you areN
the delicious assist the unerring passO
you spread your skills out before me a peacockP
among pigeons as if to say all eyes on meG
-
and make it worth my whileQ
a chill trails the sun west like a long clammy trainR
crawls over me and my makeshift benchS
over the emptying playgroundT
-
but stops at the edge of the concreteU
where eight men burning keep it at bayV
the way torches smoking around a patioW
-
ward off insects twilight rises like dark steamX
from the dewy grass but you don't see itJ
the ball still lights the courtB
until the winning jumper sinks and puts it outY
-
then earth returns to view and you jog overM
to slap my palm and beamX
and receive the grin i give you like a trophyG
