The Wolf Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIHH HH

Like a grey shadow lurking in the lightA
He ventures forth along the edge of nightA
With silent foot he scouts the coulie's rimB
And scents the carrion awaiting himB
His savage eyeballs lurid with a flareC
Seen but in unfed beasts which leave their lairC
To wrangle with their fellows for a mealD
Of bones ill covered Sets he forth to stealD
To search and snarl and forage hungrilyE
A worthless prairie vagabond is heE
Luckless the settler's heifer which astrayF
Falls to his fangs and violence a preyF
Useless her blatant calling when his teethG
Are fast upon her quivering flank beneathG
His fell voracity she falls and diesH
With inarticulate and piteous criesH
Unheard unheeded in the barren wasteI
To be devoured with savage greed and hasteI
Up the horizon once again he prowlsH
And far across its desolation howlsH
Sneaking and satisfied his lair he gainsH
And leaves her bones to bleach upon the plainsH
