I am Ojistoh I am she the wifeA
Of him whose name breathes bravery and lifeA
And courage to the tribe that calls him chiefB
I am Ojistoh his white star and heC
Is land and lake and sky and soul to meC
-
Ah but they hated him those Huron bravesD
Him who had flung their warriors into gravesD
Him who had crushed them underneath his heelE
Whose arm was iron and whose heart was steelE
To all save me Ojistoh chosen wifeA
Of my great Mohawk white star of his lifeA
-
Ah but they hated him and councilled longF
With subtle witchcraft how to work him wrongF
How to avenge their dead and strike him whereG
His pride was highest and his fame most fairG
Their hearts grew weak as women at his nameH
They dared no war path since my Mohawk cameH
With ashen bow and flinten arrow headI
To pierce their craven bodies but their deadI
Must be avenged Avenged They dared not walkJ
In day and meet his deadly tomahawkJ
They dared not face his fearless scalping knifeA
So Niyoh then they thought of me his wifeA
-
O evil evil face of them they sentK
With evil Huron speech Would I consentK
To take of wealth be queen of all their tribeL
Have wampum ermine Back I flung the bribeL
Into their teeth and said While I have lifeA
Know this Ojistoh is the Mohawk's wifeA
-
Wah how we struggled But their arms were strongF
They flung me on their pony's back with thongF
Round ankle wrist and shoulder Then upleaptK
The one I hated most his eye he sweptK
Over my misery and sneering saidK
Thus fair Ojistoh we avenge our deadK
-
And we two rode rode as a sea wind chasedK
I bound with buckskin to his hated waistK
He sneering laughing jeering while he lashedK
The horse to foam as on and on we dashedK
Plunging through creek and river bush and trailM
On on we galloped like a northern galeM
At last his distant Huron fires aflameH
We saw and nearer nearer still we cameH
-
I bound behind him in the captive's placeN
Scarely could see the outline of his faceN
I smiled and laid my cheek against his backO
Loose thou my hands I said This pace let slackO
Forget we now that thou and I are foesP
I like thee well and wish to clasp thee closeQ
I like the courage of thine eye and browR
I like thee better than my Mohawk nowR
-
He cut the cords we ceased our maddened hasteK
I wound my arms about his tawny waistK
My hand crept up the buckskin of his beltK
His knife hilt in my burning palm I feltK
One hand caressed his cheek the other drewS
The weapon softly I love you love youS
I whispered love you as my lifeA
And buried in his back his scalping knifeA
-
Ha how I rode rode as a sea wind chasedK
Mad with sudden freedom mad with hasteK
Back to my Mohawk and my home I lashedK
That horse to foam as on and on I dashedK
Plunging thro' creek and river bush and trailM
On on I galloped like a northern galeM
And then my distant Mohawk's fires aflameH
I saw as nearer nearer still I cameH
My hands all wet stained with a life's red dyeT
But pure my soul pure as those stars on highT
My Mohawk's pure white star Ojistoh still am IT
