I am sailing to the leewardA
Where the current runs to seawardA
Soft and slowB
Where the sleeping river grassesC
Brush my paddle as it passesC
To and froB
-
On the shore the heat is shakingD
All the golden sands awakingD
In the coveE
And the quaint sand piper wingingD
O'er the shallows ceases singingD
When I moveF
-
On the water's idle pillowB
Sleeps the overhanging willowB
Green and coolG
Where the rushes lift their burnishedH
Oval heads from out the tarnishedH
Emerald poolG
-
Where the very silence slumbersC
Water lilies grow in numbersC
Pure and paleI
All the morning they have restedJ
Amber crowned and pearly crestedJ
Fair and frailI
-
Here impossible romancesC
Indefinable sweet fanciesC
Cluster roundK
But they do not mar the sweetnessC
Of this still September fleetnessC
With a soundK
-
I can scarce discern the meetingD
Of the shore and stream retreatingD
So remoteL
For the laggard river dozingD
Only wakes from its reposingD
Where I floatL
-
Where the river mists are risingD
All the foliage baptizingD
With their sprayM
There the sun gleams far and faintlyN
With a shadow soft and saintlyN
In its rayM
-
And the perfume of some burningD
Far off brushwood ever turningD
To exhaleI
All its smoky fragrance dyingD
In the arms of evening lyingD
Where I sailI
-
My canoe is growing lazyN
In the atmosphere so hazyN
While I dreamO
Half in slumber I am guidingD
Eastward indistinctly glidingD
Down the streamO
