Rhyme Scheme: ABABACACDEDEAFAGABAB BBBBABABDEDELent gathers up her cloak of sombre shading | A |
In her reluctant hands | B |
Her beauty heightens fairest in its fading | A |
As pensively she stands | B |
Awaiting Easter's benediction falling | A |
Like silver stars at night | C |
Before she can obey the summons calling | A |
Her to her upward flight | C |
Awaiting Easter's wings that she must borrow | D |
Ere she can hope to fly | E |
Those glorious wings that we shall see to morrow | D |
Against the far blue sky | E |
Has not the purple of her vesture's lining | A |
Brought calm and rest to all | F |
Has her dark robe had naught of golden shining | A |
Been naught but pleasure's pall | G |
Who knows Perhaps when to the world returning | A |
In youth's light joyousness | B |
We'll wear some rarer jewels we found burning | A |
In Lent's black bordered dress | B |
So hand in hand with fitful March she lingers | B |
To beg the crowning grace | B |
Of lifting with her pure and holy fingers | B |
The veil from April's face | B |
Sweet rosy April laughing sighing waiting | A |
Until the gateway swings | B |
And she and Lent can kiss between the grating | A |
Of Easter's tissue wings | B |
Too brief the bliss the parting comes with sorrow | D |
Good bye dear Lent good bye | E |
We'll watch your fading wings outlined to morrow | D |
Against the far blue sky | E |
