Rhyme Scheme: AAAABB CDCDBB EFEFBB CACABB GHGHHBB

So near at hand our eyes o'erlooked its nearnessA
In search of distant thingsA
A dear dream lay perchance to grow in dearnessA
Had we but felt its wingsA
Astir The air our very breathing fannedB
It was so near at handB
-
Once many days ago we almost held itC
The love we so desiredD
But our shut eyes saw not and fate dispelled itC
Before our pulses firedD
To flame and errant fortune bade us standB
Hand almost touching handB
-
I sometimes think had we two been discerningE
The by path hid awayF
From others' eyes had then revealed its turningE
To us nor led astrayF
Our footsteps guiding us into love's landB
That lay so near at handB
-
So near at hand dear heart could we have known itC
Throughout those dreamy hoursA
Had either loved or loving had we shown itC
Response had sure been oursA
We did not know that heart could heart commandB
And love so near at handB
-
What then availed the red wine's subtle glistenG
We passed it blindly byH
And now what profit that we wait and listenG
Each for the other's heart beat Ah the cryH
Of love o'erlooked still lingers you and IH
Sought heaven afar we did not understandB
'Twas once so near at handB
