To night the west o'er brims with warmest dyesA
Its chalice overflowsB
With pools of purple colouring the skiesA
Aflood with gold and roseB
And some hot soul seems throbbing close to mineC
As sinks the sun within that world of wineC
-
I seem to hear a bar of music floatD
And swoon into the westE
My ear can scarcely catch the whispered noteD
But something in my breastE
Blends with that strain till both accord in oneF
As cloud and colour blend at set of sunF
-
And twilight comes with grey and restful eyesA
As ashes follow flameG
But O I heard a voice from those rich skiesA
Call tenderly my nameG
It was as if some priestly fingers stoleH
In benedictions o'er my lonely soulH
-
I know not why but all my being longedI
And leapt at that sweet callJ
My heart outreached its arms all passion throngedI
And beat against Fate's wallJ
Crying in utter homesickness to beK
Near to a heart that loves and leans to meK
