Captive Is there a hell to him like thisA
A taunt more galling than the Huron's hissA
He proud and scornful he who laughed at lawB
He scion of the deadly IroquoisC
He the bloodthirsty he the Mohawk chiefD
He who despises pain and sneers at griefD
Here in the hated Huron's vicious clutchE
That even captive he disdains to touchE
-
Captive Butnever conquered Mohawk braveF
Stoops not to be to anyman a slaveF
Least to the puny tribe his soul abhorsG
The tribe whose wigwams sprinkle Simcoe's shoresG
With scowling brow he stands and courage highH
Watching with haughty and defiant eyeH
His captors as they council o'er his fateI
Or strive his boldness to intimidateI
Then fling they unto him the choiceJ
-
Wilt thou walk o'er the bed of fire that waits thee nowK
Walk with uncovered feet upon the coalsL
Until thou reach the ghostly Land of SoulsL
And with thy Mohawk death song please our earM
Or wilt thou with the women rest thee hereM
His eyes flash like an eagle's and his handsN
Clench at the insult Like a god he standsN
Prepare the fire he scornfully demandsN
-
He knoweth not that this same jeering bandO
Will bite the dust will lick the Mohawk's handO
Will kneel and cower at the Mohawk's feetP
Will shrink when Mohawk war drums wildly beatP
-
HIs death will be avenged with hideous hateI
By Iroquois swift to annihilateI
His vile detested captors that now flauntQ
Their war clubs in his face with sneer and tauntQ
Not thinking soon that reeeking red and rawR
Their scalps will deck the belts of IroquoisC
-
The path of coals outstretches white with heatP
A forest fir's length ready for his feetP
Unflinching as a rock he steps alongS
The burning mass and sings his wild war songS
Sings as he sang when once he used to roamT
Throughout the forests of his southern homeT
Where down the Genesee the water roarsG
Where gentle Mohawk purls between its shoresG
Songs that of exploit and of prowess tellU
Songs of the Iroquois invincibleV
-
Up the long trail of fire he boasting goesW
Dancing a war dance to defy his foesW
His flesh is scorched his muscles burn and shrinkX
But still he dances to death's awful brinkX
-
The eagle plume that crests his haughty headY
Will never droop until his heart be deadY
Slower and slower yet his footsep swingsZ
Wilder and wilder still his death song ringsZ
Fiercer and fiercer thro' the forest boundsA2
His voice that leaps to Happier Hunting GroundsA2
One savage yellU
-
Then loyal to his raceB2
He bends to death butnever to disgraceB2
