I measure every Grief I meetA
With narrow probing EyesB
I wonder if It weighs like MineC
Or has an Easier sizeB
-
I wonder if They bore it longD
Or did it just beginE
I could not tell the Date of MineC
It feels so old a painF
-
I wonder if it hurts to liveG
And if They have to tryH
And whether could They choose betweenI
It would not be to dieH
-
I note that Some gone patient longD
At length renew their smileJ
An imitation of a LightK
That has so little OilL
-
I wonder if when Years have piledM
Some Thousands on the HarmN
That hurt them early such a lapseO
Could give them any BalmP
-
Or would they go on aching stillQ
Through Centuries of NerveR
Enlightened to a larger PainF
In Contrast with the LoveS
-
The Grieved are many I am toldT
There is the various CauseU
Death is but one and comes but onceV
And only nails the eyesB
-
There's Grief of Want and grief of ColdT
A sort they call DespairW
There's Banishment from native EyesB
In Sight of Native AirW
-
And though I may not guess the kindX
Correctly yet to meY
A piercing Comfort it affordsZ
In passing CalvaryY
-
To note the fashions of the CrossA2
And how they're mostly wornB2
Still fascinated to presumeC2
That Some are like My OwnD2
