The blue bell is the sweetest flowerA
That waves in summer airB
Its blossoms have the mightiest powerA
To soothe my spirit's careB
-
There is a spell in purple heathC
Too wildly sadly dearD
The violet has a fragrant breathE
But fragrance will not cheerD
-
The trees are bare the sun is coldF
And seldom seldom seenG
The heavens have lost their zone of goldF
The earth its robe of greenG
-
And ice upon the glancing streamH
Has cast its sombre shadeI
And distant hills and valleys seemH
In frozen mist arrayedI
-
-
The blue bell cannot charm me nowJ
The heath has lost its bloomK
The violets in the glen belowL
They yield no sweet perfumeK
-
But though I mourn the heather bellM
'Tis better far awayN
I know how fast my tears would swellM
To see it smile todayN
-
And that wood flower that hides so shyO
Beneath the mossy stoneP
Its balmy scent and dewy eyeO
'Tis not for them I moanP
-
It is the slight and stately stemQ
The blossom's silvery blueR
The buds hid like a sapphire gemQ
In sheaths of emerald hueR
-
'Tis these that breathe upon my heartS
A calm and softening spellM
That if it makes the tear drop startS
Has power to soothe as wellM
-
For these I weep so long dividedT
Through winter's dreary dayN
In longing weep but most when guidedT
On withered banks to strayN
-
If chilly then the light should fallU
Adown the dreary skyO
And gild the dank and darkened wallU
With transient brilliancyV
-
How do I yearn how do I pineW
For the time of flowers to comeX
And turn me from that fading shineW
To mourn the fields of homeY
