Ah why because the dazzling sunA
Restored our Earth to joyB
Have you departed every oneA
And left a desert skyC
-
All through the night your glorious eyesD
Were gazing down in mineE
And with a full heart's thankful sighsD
I blessed that watch divineE
-
I was at peace and drank your beamsF
As they were life to meG
And revelled in my changeful dreamsF
Like petrel on the seaG
-
Thought followed thought star followed starH
Through boundless regions onI
While one sweet influence near and farH
Thrilled through and proved us oneA
-
Why did the morning dawn to breakJ
So great so pure a spellK
And scorch with fire the tranquil cheekL
Where your cool radiance fellK
-
Blood red he rose and arrow straightM
His fierce beams struck my browN
The soul of nature sprang elateM
But mine sank sad and lowO
-
My lids closed down yet through their veilP
I saw him blazing stillQ
And steep in gold the misty daleP
And flash upon the hillQ
-
I turned me to the pillow thenR
To call back night and seeG
Your worlds of solemn light againR
Throb with my heart and meG
-
It would not do the pillow glowedS
And glowed both roof and floorT
And birds sang loudly in the woodU
And fresh winds shook the doorT
-
The curtains waved the wakened fliesD
Were murmuring round my roomV
Imprisoned there till I should riseD
And give them leave to roamW
-
Oh stars and dreams and gentle nightX
Oh night and stars returnY
And hide me from the hostile lightX
That does not warm but burnY
-
That drains the blood of suffering menR
Drinks tears instead of dewZ
Let me sleep through his blinding reignA2
And only wake with youZ
