Ho ye lovers list to meA
Warning words have I for theeA
Give ye heed hefore ye wedB
To this thing Sir Chaucer saidB
-
Love wol not be constrained by maistrieC
When maistrie cometh the god of love anonD
Beteth his winges and farewel he is gonD
-
Other poets knew as wellE
And the same sad story tellE
Hark ye heed ye while ye mayF
What the worldly Pope doth sayF
-
Love free as air at sight of human tiesG
Spreads his light wings and in a moment fliesG
-
This Sir Hudibras brave knightH
Faithful lover constant wightH
From his lady's lips did hearC
Mark ye eke the warning clearC
-
Love is too generous t'abideI
To be against its nature ty'dI
For where 'tis of itself inclin'dI
It breaks loose when it is confin'dI
-
Ho ye lovers shall I tellE
How through life with Love to dwellE
Spite of all the poets sayF
Harken to the easy wayF
Strive to bind him not but seeA
That the little god binds theeA
