The Twenty Hoss-power Shay Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABBCCDD EEFFGGHHAAII AAAJJKKAA LLMMDD NNAAOOPPQQ IIQQAARRBSBBTRUUCCVV AA| You have heard of the wonderful one hoss shay | A |
| That was built in such a logical way | A |
| It ran a hundred years to a day | A |
| And then of a sudden it up and bust | B |
| And all that was left was a mound of dust | B |
| Holmes O W told it well | C |
| In a rhyme of his what there was to tell | C |
| But the one hoss shay wasn't one two three | D |
| With a vehicle once belonged to me | D |
| - | |
| One hoss No sir Not six nor nine | E |
| Twenty there were in this rig of mine | E |
| Twenty hosses as tough as rocks | F |
| All caged up in a sort of box | F |
| That stood jist back of the forward wheels | G |
| Right She was one of those automobiles | G |
| With twenty hosses bottled inside | H |
| Hosses that not only pull but ride | H |
| Wonder what Holmes would have had to say | A |
| If the mare had rode in his one hoss shay | A |
| I reckon the shay would have logicked out | I |
| Before the century rolled about | I |
| - | |
| Well this big touring car I say | A |
| Was built just like the one hoss shay | A |
| Some dependable logical way | A |
| Flipflaps dujabs wheels and things | J |
| Levers thing gum bobs and springs | J |
| Hub and felloe and hoss power chest | K |
| One part just as strong as the rest | K |
| So logic is logic as Holmes would say | A |
| And no one part could first give way | A |
| - | |
| Wonderful vehicle you'll admit | L |
| With not one flaw in the whole of it | L |
| As long as I had it I declare | M |
| I hadn't one cent to pay for repair | M |
| It couldn't break down because you see | D |
| It was such a logical symphony | D |
| - | |
| Now for my tale We're not so slow | N |
| These days as a hundred years ago | N |
| And it's like enough that the one hoss shay | A |
| Ambling along in its sleepy way | A |
| Should creep a century 'thout a break | O |
| But nowadays we aim to make | O |
| A pace that is something like a pace | P |
| And if that old shay got in our race | P |
| It would stand the pressure twenty days | Q |
| And go to the home of played out shays | Q |
| - | |
| Logic is logic Just figure this out | I |
| For I know just what I'm talking about | I |
| If a one hoss vehicle genus shays | Q |
| Will stand our pressure twenty days | Q |
| Then vice versa a twenty hoss shay | A |
| Should stand the pressure just one day | A |
| Well mine is a logical automobile | R |
| From rubber tire to steering wheel | R |
| I bought it one morning at just | B |
| And the very next morning what did it do | S |
| Right on the second but up and bust | B |
| Talk of the old shay's pile of dust | B |
| That's not logical my mobile | T |
| Vanished completely Brass and steel | R |
| Iron and wood and rubber tire | U |
| Went right up in a gush of fire | U |
| And in half a minute a gassy smell | C |
| Was all I had left by which to tell | C |
| I ever owned a touring car | V |
| And then that vanished and there you are | V |
| - | |
| End of my twenty hoss power shay | A |
| Logic is logic That's all I say | A |
