The Ballade Of The Mistletoe Bough Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

I am standing under the mistletoeA
And I smile but no answering smile repliesB
For her haughty glance bids me plainly knowA
That not for me is the thing I prizeB
Instead from her coldly scornful eyesB
Indifference looks on my barefaced guileC
She knows of course what my act impliesB
But look at those lips Do they hint a smileC
-
I stand here eager and beam and glowA
And she only looks a refined surpriseB
As clear and crisp and as cold as snowA
And as Stop I will never criticiseB
I know what her cold glance signifiesB
But I'll stand just here as I am awhileC
Till a smile to my pleading look repliesB
But look at those lips Do they hint a smileC
-
Just look at those lips now I claim they showA
A spirit unmeet under Christmas skiesB
I claim that such lips on such maidens oweA
A something the custom justifiesB
I claim that the mistletoe rule appliesB
To her as well as the rank and fileC
We should meet these things in a cheerful guiseB
But look at those lips Do they hint a smileC
-
ENVOYD
-
These customs of Christmas may shock the wiseB
And mistletoe boughs may be out of styleC
And a kiss be a thing that all maids despiseB
But look at those lips do They hint a smileC
