Rhyme Scheme: AABBC DDEEC FFDDC GGBBC HHIIC

The shades of night was fallin' slowA
As through New York a guy did goA
And nail on ev'ry barroom doorB
A card that this here motter boreB
No beer no workC
-
His brow was sad his mouth was dryD
It was the first day of JulyD
And where all parched and scorched it hungE
These words was stenciled on his tongueE
No beer no workC
-
Oh stay the maiden said and supF
This malted milk from this here cupF
A shudder passed through that there guyD
But with a moan he made replyD
No beer no workC
-
At break of day as through the townG
The milkman put milk bottles downG
Onto one stoop a sort of snoreB
Was heard and then was heard no moreB
No beer no workC
-
The poor old guy plumb dead was foundH
And planted in the buryin' groundH
Still graspin' in his hand of iceI
Them placards with this sad deviceI
No beer no workC
