There was a man in New York CityA
His name was George Adolphus KnightB
So soft of heart he wept with pityA
To see our language and its plightB
-
He mourned to see it sorely goadedC
With silent letters left and rightB
These from his own name he unloadedD
And wrote it Georg Adolfus NitE
-
Six other men in that same cityA
Who longed to see a Spelling HeavenF
Formed of themselves a strong committeeA
And asked Georg Nit to make it sevenF
-
He joined the other six with pleasureG
Proud such important men to knowH
Agreeing that their first great measureG
Should be to shorten the word thoughH
-
But G Adolfus Nit was lazyA
He dilly dallied every dayI
His life was dreamy slow and hazyA
And indolent in every wayI
-
On Monday morn at nine preciselyA
The six reformers Nit not thereJ
Prepared to simplify though nicelyA
And each was eager for his shareJ
-
Smith bit the h off short and ate itE
Griggs from the thoug chewed off the gA
Brown snapped off u to masticate itE
And tho alone was left for threeA
-
Delancy's teeth broke o off quicklyA
From th Billings took his tA
And then the h albeit pricklyA
Was shortly swallowed by McGeeA
-
This done the six lay back in plentyA
Well fed they picked their teeth and smiledK
And lazy Nit aboutL
Strolled in as careless as a childK
-
Well boys he said where's the collationH
I'm hungry let us eat some thoughH
All gone they said and then StarvationH
Who is not lazy laid Nit lowH
-
Nit trembled gasped and as the phrase isM
Cashed in his checks gave up his breathN
And turned his toes up to the daisiesO
His laziness had caused his deathN
-
WarningP
-
Spelling reformers should make hasteQ
If each reformer wants a tasteQ
