Upon Bottle Miche the autre dayA
While yet the nuit was earlyB
Je met a homme whose barbe was greyA
Whose cheveaux long and curlyB
-
Je am a poete sir dit heB
Je live where tres grande want teemsC
I'm faim sir Sil vous plait give meB
Un franc or cinquatite centimesD
-
I donne him vingt big copper sousE
But dit You moderne rhymersE
The sacre poet name abuseE
Les poets were old timersE
-
Je know I know he wept contriteF
The bards no more suis mightyB
Ils rise no more in eleve flightF
Though some are beaucoup flightyB
-
Vous wonder why Je weep this wayA
Pour quoi these tears and blubbersE
It is mon fault les bards todayA
Helas suis mere earth grubbersE
-
There was a time when tout might seeE
My grande flights dans the saddleG
Crowned rois indeed applauded meE
Le Pegasus astraddleG
-
Le winged horse avec acclaimH
Was voted mon possessionI
Je rode him tous les jours to fameH
Je led the whole processionI
-
Then arrivee the Prussian warJ
The siege the sacre famineI
Then some had but a crust encoreJ
We mange the last least ham an'I
-
Helas Mon noble winged steedK
Went oft avec no dinnerL
On epics il refusee feedK
And maigre grew and thinnerL
-
Tout food was gone and dans the streetM
Each homme sought crusts to sate himN
Joyeux were those with horse's meatM
And Pegasus Je ate himN
-
My anger then Je could not hideO
To parler scarcely ableG
Oh curses dans you sir Je criedO
Vous human livery stableG
-
He fled But vous who read this knowI
Why mon pauvre verse is beatenI
By that of cinquante years agoI
'Vant Pegasus fut eatenI
