When first we met she seemed so whiteA
I feared herB
As one might near a spirit brightA
I neared herB
An angel pure from heaven aboveC
I dreamed herB
And far too good for human loveC
I deemed herB
A spirit free from mortal taintD
I thought herB
And incense as unto a saintD
I brought herB
-
Well incense burning did not seemE
To please herB
And insolence I feared she'd deemE
To squeeze herB
Nor did I dare for that same whyF
To kiss herB
Lest shocked she'd cause my eager eyeF
To miss herB
I sickened thinking of some wayG
To win herB
When lo she asked me one fine dayG
To dinnerB
-
Twas thus that made of common fleshH
I found herB
And in a mortal lover's meshH
I wound herB
Embraces kisses loving looksI
I gave herB
And buying bon bons flowers and booksI
I save herB
For her few honest human taintsJ
I love herB
Nor would I change for all the saintsJ
Above herB
Those eyes that little face that soK
Endear herB
And all the human joy I knowK
When near herB
And I am glad when to my breastL
I press herB
She's just a woman like the restL
God bless herB
