Rhyme Scheme: ABCDB EFGHF AIJKI LGMNG OMPQM RBSTB

Your picture slung about my neckA
The day we went afieldB
Swung out before the trenchC
It caught the eye of rank and fileD
Who knew The Colonel's ShieldB
-
I thrust it back and with my menE
Our General rode aheadF
We stormed the great redoubtG
As if it were an easy thingH
But rows of us fell deadF
-
Your picture hanging on my neckA
Up with my men I rushedI
We made an awful chargeJ
And then my horse The Lady BessK
Dropped and my leg was crushedI
-
The blood of battle in my veinsL
A blue coat dragged me outG
But I remembered youM
I kissed your picture did you knowN
And yelled For the redoubtG
-
The Twenty fourth my scarred old dogsO
Growled back He'll put us throughM
We'll take him in our armsP
Our picture there the girl he lovesQ
Shall see what we can doM
-
The foe was silenced so were weR
I lay upon the fieldB
Among the Twenty fourthS
Your picture shattered on my breastT
Had proved The Colonel's ShieldB
