The Autumn Sheaf Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJStill I remember only autumn days | A |
When golden leaves were floating in the air | B |
And reddening oaks stood sombre in the haze | A |
Till sunset struck them with its redder glare | B |
- | |
And faded leaving me by wood and field | C |
In fragrant dew and fragrant velvet mould | D |
To wait among the shades of night concealed | C |
And learn that story which but once is told | D |
- | |
Though many seasons of the falling leaves | E |
I watched my failing hopes and watched their fall | F |
In memory they are gathered now like sheaves | E |
So withered that a touch would scatter all | F |
- | |
Dead leaves and dust more dead to fall apart | G |
Leaves spreading once in arches over me | H |
And dust enclosing once a loving heart | G |
Still I am happy with youth's mystery | H |
- | |
It cannot be unbound my autumn sheaf | I |
So let it stand the ruin of my past | J |
Returning autumn brings the old belief | I |
Its mystery all its own and it will last | J |
