On The Campagna Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIG GJJKLG MDNJDO ADPGBH

Stop on the Appian WayA
In the Roman CampagnaB
Stop at my tombC
The tomb of Cecilia MetellaD
To day as you see itE
Alaric saw it ages agoF
When he with his pale visaged GothsG
Sat at the gates of RomeH
Reading his Runic shieldI
Odin thy curse remainsG
-
Beneath these battlementsG
My bones were stirred with Roman prideJ
Though centuries before my Romans diedJ
Now my bones are dust the Goths are dustK
The river bed is dry where sleeps the kingL
My tomb remainsG
-
When Rome commanded the earthM
Great were the MetelliD
I was Metella's wifeN
I loved him and I diedJ
Then with slow patience built he this memorialD
Each century marks his loveO
-
Pass by on the Appian WayA
The tomb of Cecilia MetellaD
Wild shepherds alone seek its shelterP
Wild buffaloes tramp at its baseG
Deep is its desolationB
Deep as the shadow of RomeH
