Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLKMuch have I spoken of the faded leaf | A |
Long have I listened to the wailing wind | B |
And watched it ploughing through the heavy clouds | C |
For autumn charms my melancholy mind | B |
- | |
When autumn comes the poets sing a dirge | D |
The year must perish all the flowers are dead | E |
The sheaves are gathered and the mottled quail | F |
Runs in the stubble but the lark has fled | E |
- | |
Still autumn ushers in the Christmas cheer | G |
The holly berries and the ivy tree | H |
They weave a chaplet for the Old Year's bier | I |
These waiting mourners do not sing for me | H |
- | |
I find sweet peace in depths of autumn woods | J |
Where grow the ragged ferns and roughened moss | K |
The naked silent trees have taught me this | L |
The loss of beauty is not always loss | K |
