Mercedes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKII

Under a sultry yellow skyA
On the yellow sand I lieA
The crinkled vapors smite my brainB
I smoulder in a fiery painB
-
Above the crags the condor fliesC
He knows where the red gold liesC
He knows where the diamonds shineD
If I knew would she be mineD
-
Mercedes in her hammock swingsE
In her court a palm tree flingsE
Its slender shadow on the groundF
The fountain falls with silver soundF
-
Her lips are like this cactus cupG
With my hand I crush it upG
I tear its flaming leaves apartH
Would that I could tear her heartH
-
Last night a man was at her gateI
In the hedge I lay in waitI
I saw Mercedes meet him thereJ
By the fireflies in her hairJ
-
I waited till the break of dayK
Then I rose and stole awayK
But left my dagger in the gateI
Now she knows her lover's fateI
