Whose thoughts and wishes end with every day | B |
For whom no future is whose present hours | C |
Reveal no looming shade of that which was | D |
- | |
But Memory is immortal for she comes | E |
To me from heaven or hell to me once more | F |
As birds that migrate choose the ocean wind | G |
That beats them helpless while it steers them home | H |
So I was this way driven I chose this way | B |
Of old my dwelling place where all my race | I |
Are buried At first I was enchanted here | J |
Impossible appeared the pall the shroud | K |
And in my spell I trod the grassy streets | L |
Where in the summer days mild oxen drew | M |
The bristling hay and in the winter snows | N |
The creaking masts and knees for mighty ships | O |
Whose hulls were parted on the coral reefs | P |
Or foundered in the depth of Arctic nights | Q |
I wandered through the gardens rank and waste | R |
Wonderful once when I was like the flowers | C |
Along the weedy paths grew roses still | S |
Surviving empire but remaining queens | T |
- | |
My mood established by the slumbrous town | U |
Slumber with slumber dream with dream should be | V |
I sought a mansion on the lonely shore | F |
From which his feet made level with his head | W |
Its occupant was gone I lived alone | X |
Whoso beneath this roof had played his part | Y |
In life's deep tragedy not here again | Z |
Could be rehearsed its scenes of love or hate | A2 |
Upon the ancient walls my pictures hung | B2 |
Of men and women strong and beautiful | C2 |
Whose shoulders pushed along the world's great wheel | D2 |
Landscapes where cloud and mountain rose as one | E2 |
Where rivers crept in secret vales or rolled | F2 |
Past city walls whose towers and palaces | G2 |
By slaves were builded and by princes fallen | E2 |
And books whose pages ever told one tale | H2 |
The tale of human love in joy or pain | I2 |
The seed of our last hope Eternity | V |
Days glided by this mirage cheating all | J2 |
Morn came eve went and we were tranquil still | S |
If form and sound and color fail to show | K2 |
By poet's painter's sculptor's noble touch | L2 |
The subtle truth of Nature can I tell | M2 |
How Nature poised my mind in light and shade | N2 |
- | |
But Memory is immortal and to me | V |
She advanced silent slow a muffled shape | O2 |
One moonlight night I walked through long white lanes | P2 |
The sky and sea were like a frosted web | Q2 |
The air was heavy with familiar scents | R2 |
Which travelled down the wind I knew from where | S2 |
The fragrance of a grove of Northern pines | T2 |
My feet were hastening thither and my heart | Y |
At last I stood before a funeral mound | U2 |
From which I fled when vanished love and life | V2 |
Long years ago fled from my father's house | W2 |
Banished myself to banish him I loved | X2 |
His broken history and his early grave | Y2 |
And in the moonlight Memory floated on | Z2 |
Immortal with my now immortal Love | A3 |
