In the still dark shade of the palace wallA
Where the peacocks strutB
Where the queen may have heard my madrigalC
Together we satD

My sombrero hid the fire in my eyesE
And shaded her ownF
This serge cloak stifled her sweet little criesE
When I kissed her mouthG

The pale olive trees on the distant plainH
The jagged blue rocksI
The vaporous sea like mountain chainH
Dropped into the nightJ

We saw the lights in the palace flareK
The musicians playedL
The red guards slashed and sabred the stairK
And cursed the old kingM
-
In the long black shade of the palace wallA
We sat the night throughN
Under my cloak but I cannot tell allA
The queen may have seenO
