I wandered to the shore nor knew I thenA
What my desire whether for wild lamentB
Or sweet regret to fill the idle pauseC
Of twilight melancholy in my houseD
And watch the flowing tide the passing sailsE
Or to implore the air and sea and skyF
For that eternal passion in their powerG
Which souls like mine who ponder on their fateH
May feel and be as they gods to themselvesI
Thither I went whatever was my moodJ
The sands the rocks and beds of bending sedgeK
I saw alone Between the east and westL
Along the beach no creature moved besidesM
High on the eastern point a lighthouse shoneN
Steered by its lamp a ship stood out to seaO
And vanished from its rays towards the deepP
While in the west above a wooded isleQ
An island cloud hung in the emerald skyF
Hiding pale Venus in its sombre shadeR
I wandered up and down the sands I loiteredR
Among the rocks and trampled through the sedgeK
But I grew weary of the stocks and stonesS
I will go hence I thought the ElementsT
Have lost their charm my soul is dead to nightR
Oh passive creeping Sea and stagnant AirU
Farewell Dull sands and rocks and sedge farewellV
Homeward I turned my face but stayed my feetR
Should I go back but to revive againA
The ancient pain Hark suddenly there cameW
From over sea a sound like that of speechX
And suddenly I felt my pulses leapP
As though some Presence were approaching meO
Loud as the voice of Ocean's dark haired kingY
A breeze came down the sea the sea rose highF
The surging waves sang round me this their songZ
Oh yet your love will triumph He shall comeA2
In love's wild tumult he shall come once moreB2
By tracks of ocean or by paths of earthC2
The wanderer will reach you and remainD2
The breakers dashed among the rocks and theyE2
Seemed full of life the foam dissolved the sandsF2
And the sedge trembled in the swelling tideR
Was this a promise of the vaunting SeaO
Or the illusion of a last despairU
Either or both still homeward I must goG2
And that way turned mine eyes and thought they metR
A picture surely so or I was madR
The crimson harvest moon was rising fullH2
Above my roof and glimmered on my wallsI2
Within the doorway stood a man I knewJ2
No picture this I saw approaching meO
Him I had hoped for grieved for and despairedR
My ship is wrecked he cried and I returnK2
Never to leave my love You are my loveL2
I too am wrecked I sighed by lonely yearsM2
Returning you but find another wreckN2
He bent his face to search my own and spakeO2
What I have traversed sea and land to findR
I find For liberty I fought and lifeP2
On savage shores and wastes of unknown seasQ2
While waiting for this hour Oh think you notR
Immortal love mates with immortal loveL2
Always And now at last we know this loveL2
My soul was filling with a mighty joyR2
I could not show yet must I show my loveL2
From you whose will divided broke our heartsS2
I now demand a different kiss than thatR
Which then you said should be our parting kissT2
Given I vow the past shall be forgotR
The kiss and we are one Give me the kissT2
Like the dark rocks upon the sands he stoodR
When on his breast I fell and kissed his lipsU2
All the wild clangor of the sea was hushedR
The rapid silver waves ran each to eachX
Lapsed in the deep with joyous murmured sighsV2
Years of repentance mine forgiveness hisW2
To tell Happy we paced the tranquil shoresX2
Till between sea and sky we saw the sunY2
And all our wiser loving days beganZ2
