O mother open the window wideA
And let the daylight inB
The hills grow darker to my sightC
And thoughts begin to swimD
-
And mother dear take my young sonE
Since I was born of theeF
And care for all his little waysG
And nurse him on thy kneeF
-
And mother wash my pale pale handsH
And then bind up my feetI
My body may no longer restJ
Out of its winding sheetI
-
And mother dear take a sapling twigK
And green grass newly mownF
And lay them on my empty bedL
That my sorrow be not knownF
-
And mother find three berries redL
And pluck them from the stalkM
And burn them at the first cockcrowN
That my spirit may not walkM
-
And mother dear break a willow wandO
And if the sap be evenF
Then save it for sweet Robert s sakeP
And he ll know my soul s in heavenF
-
And mother when the big tears fallQ
And fall God knows they mayR
Tell him I died of my great loveS
And my dying heart was gayR
-
And mother dear when the sun has setT
And the pale kirk grass wavesU
Then carry me through the dim twilightC
And hide me among the gravesU
