| Instead of men and women years ago | B |
| And found them gentle mates nor thought to know | B |
| A sweefer music than they played to me | A |
| But soon their trailing purple was not free | A |
| Of this world's dust their lutes did silent grow | B |
| And I myself grew faint and blind below | B |
| Their vanishing eyes Then THOU didst come to be | A |
| Beloved what they seemed Their shining fronts | C |
| Their songs their splendors better yet the same | D |
| As river water hallowed into fonts | E |
| Met in thee and from out thee overcame | D |
| My soul with satisfaction of all wants | E |
| Because God's gifts put man's best dreams to shame | D |
