IA
Now give us lands where the olives growB
Cried the North to the SouthC
Where the sun with a golden mouth can blowB
Blow bubbles of grapes down a vineyard rowB
Cried the North to the SouthC
-
Now give us men from the sunless plainD
Cried the South to the NorthE
By need of work in the snow and rainD
Made strong and brave by familiar painD
Cried the South to the NorthE
-
IIA
Give lucider hills and intenser seasF
Said the North to the SouthC
Since ever by symbols and bright degreesF
Art childlike climbs to the dear Lord's kneesF
Said the North to the SouthC
-
Give strenuous souls for belief and prayerG
Said the South to the NorthE
That stand in the dark on the lowest stairG
While affirming of God 'He is certainly there'G
Said the South to the NorthE
-
IIIA
Yet oh for the skies that are softer and higherG
Sighed the North to the SouthC
For the flowers that blaze and the trees that aspireG
And the insects made of a song or a fireG
Sighed the North to the SouthC
-
And oh for a seer to discern the sameH
Sighed the South to the NorthE
For a poet's tongue of baptismal flameH
To call the tree or the flower by its nameH
Sighed the South to the NorthE
-
IV-
The North sent therefore a man of menI
As a grace to the SouthC
And thus to Rome came AndersenJ
Alas but must you take him againI
Said the South to the NorthE
