The breaking waves dashed highA
On a stern and rock bound coastB
And the woods against a stormy skyA
Their giant branches tostB
-
And the heavy night hung darkC
The hills and water o'erD
When a band of exiles moored their barkC
On the wild New England shoreE
-
Not as the conqueror comesF
They the true hearted cameG
Not with the roll of the stirring drumsF
And the trumpet that sings of fameG
-
Not as the flying comeH
In silence and in fearI
They shook the depths of the desert's gloomJ
With their hymns of lofty cheerI
-
Amidst the storm they sangK
And the stars heard and the seaL
And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rangK
To the anthem of the freeL
-
The ocean eagle soaredB
From his nest by the white wave's foamM
And the rocking pines of the forest roaredB
This was their welcome homeM
-
There were men with hoary hairN
Amidst that pilgrim bandB
Why had they come to wither thereN
Away from their childhood's landB
-
There was woman's fearless eyeA
Lit by her deep love's truthO
There was manhood's brow serenely highA
And the fiery heart of youthO
-
What sought they thus afarP
Bright jewels of the mineQ
The wealth of the seas the spoils of warE
They sought a faith's pure shrineQ
-
Ay call it holy groundB
The soil where first they trodB
They have left unstained what there they foundB
Freedom to worship GodB
