A
He listened at the porch that dayB
To hear the wheel go on and onC
And then it stopped ran back awayB
While through the door he brought the sunD
But now my spinning is all doneD
-
-
He sat beside me with an oathE
That love ne'er ended once begunD
I smiled believing for us bothE
What was the truth for only oneD
And now my spinning is all doneD
-
-
My mother cursed me that I heardF
A young man's wooing as I spunD
Thanks cruel mother for that wordF
For I have since a harder knownG
And now my spinning is all doneD
-
-
I thought O God my first born's cryH
Both voices to mine ear would drownI
I listened in mine agonyJ
It was the silence made me groanG
And now my spinning is all doneD
-
-
Bury me 'twixt my mother's graveK
Who cursed me on her death bed loneG
And my dead baby's God it saveK
Who not to bless me would not moanG
And now my spinning is all doneD
-
-
A stone upon my heart and headL
But no name written on the stoneG
Sweet neighbours whisper low insteadL
This sinner was a loving oneD
And now her spinning is all doneD
-
-
And let the door ajar remainM
In case he should pass by anonM
And leave the wheel out very plainM
That HE when passing in the sunM
May see the spinning is all doneM
