The Church-bell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN

As I was lying in my bedA
I heard the church bell ringB
Before one solemn word was saidA
A bird began to singB
-
I heard a dog begin to barkC
And a bold crowing cockD
The bell between the cold and darkC
Tolled It was five o'clockD
-
The church bell tolled and the bird sangE
A clear true voice he hadF
The cock crew and the church bell rangE
I knew it had gone madF
-
A hand reached down from the dark skiesG
It took the bell rope thongH
The bell cried Look Lift up your eyesG
The clapper shook to songH
-
The iron clapper laughed aloudI
Like clashing wind and waveJ
The bell cried out Be strong and proudI
Then with a shout Be braveJ
-
The rumbling of the market cartsK
The pounding of men's feetL
Were drowned in song Lift up your heartsK
The song was loud and sweetL
-
Slow and slow the great bell swungM
It hung in the steeple muteN
And people tore its living tongueM
Out by the very rootN
