The Fathers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBECFFGE HIJKHJGLMGNGM OPPOOQJQRRJ

Our fathers all were poorA
Poorer our fathers' fathersB
Beyond we dare not lookC
We the sons keep storeD
Of tarnished gold that gathersB
Around us from the nightE
Record it in this bookC
That when the line is drawnF
Credit and creditor goneF
Column and figure flownG
Will open into lightE
-
Archaic fevers shakeH
Our healthy flesh and bloodI
Plumped in the passing dayJ
And fed with pleasant foodK
The fathers' anger and acheH
Will not will not awayJ
And leave the living aloneG
But on our careless browsL
Faintly their furrows engraveM
Like veinings in a stoneG
Breathe in the sunny houseN
Nightmare of blackened boneG
Cellar and choking caveM
-
Panics and furies flyO
Through our unhurried veinsP
Heavenly lights and rainsP
Purify heart and eyeO
Past agonies purifyO
And lay the sullen dustQ
The angers will not awayJ
We hold our fathers' trustQ
Wrong riches sorrow and allR
Until they topple and fallR
And fallen let in the dayJ
