The Castle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDECD FGFFG HIHHI JKJJK LMLLN

All through that summer at ease we layA
And daily from the turret wallB
We watched the mowers in the hayA
And the enemy half a mile awayA
They seemed no threat to us at allB
-
For what we thought had we to fearC
With our arms and provender load on loadD
Our towering battlements tier on tierE
And friendly allies drawing nearC
On every leafy summer roadD
-
Our gates were strong our walls were thickF
So smooth and high no man could winG
A foothold there no clever trickF
Could take us have us dead or quickF
Only a bird could have got inG
-
What could they offer us for baitH
Our captain was brave and we were trueI
There was a little private gateH
A little wicked wicket gateH
The wizened warder let them throughI
-
Oh then our maze of tunneled stoneJ
Grew thin and treacherous as airK
The cause was lost without a groanJ
The famous citadel overthrownJ
And all its secret galleries bareK
-
How can this shameful tale be toldL
I will maintain until my deathM
We could do nothing being soldL
Our only enemy was goldL
And we had no arms to fight it withN
