The Castle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDECD FGFFG HIHHI JKJJK LMLLN| All through that summer at ease we lay | A |
| And daily from the turret wall | B |
| We watched the mowers in the hay | A |
| And the enemy half a mile away | A |
| They seemed no threat to us at all | B |
| - | |
| For what we thought had we to fear | C |
| With our arms and provender load on load | D |
| Our towering battlements tier on tier | E |
| And friendly allies drawing near | C |
| On every leafy summer road | D |
| - | |
| Our gates were strong our walls were thick | F |
| So smooth and high no man could win | G |
| A foothold there no clever trick | F |
| Could take us have us dead or quick | F |
| Only a bird could have got in | G |
| - | |
| What could they offer us for bait | H |
| Our captain was brave and we were true | I |
| There was a little private gate | H |
| A little wicked wicket gate | H |
| The wizened warder let them through | I |
| - | |
| Oh then our maze of tunneled stone | J |
| Grew thin and treacherous as air | K |
| The cause was lost without a groan | J |
| The famous citadel overthrown | J |
| And all its secret galleries bare | K |
| - | |
| How can this shameful tale be told | L |
| I will maintain until my death | M |
| We could do nothing being sold | L |
| Our only enemy was gold | L |
| And we had no arms to fight it with | N |
