PHOCYL | B |
- | |
- | |
We hope that the departed will rise again from the dust after which like the gods they will be immortal | B |
- | |
- | |
Now man awakes and from his silent bed | C |
Where he has slept for ages lifts his head | C |
Shakes off the slumber of ten thousand years | D |
And on the borders of new worlds appears | D |
Whate'er the bold the rash adventure cost | E |
In wide eternity I dare be lost | F |
The muse is wont in narrow bounds to sing | G |
To teach the swain or celebrate the king | G |
I grasp the whole no more to parts confin'd | H |
I lift my voice and sing to humankind | H |
I sing to men and angels angels join | I |
While such the theme their sacred songs with mine | J |
Again the trumpet's intermitted sound | K |
Rolls the wide circuit of creation round | K |
A universal concourse to prepare | L |
Of all that ever breath'd the vital air | L |
In some wide field which active whirlwinds sweep | M |
Drive cities forests mountains to the deep | M |
To smooth and lengthen out th' unbounded space | N |
And spread an area for all human race | N |
Now monuments prove faithful to their trust | O |
And render back their long committed dust | O |
Now charnels rattle scatter'd limbs and all | B |
The various bones obsequious to the call | B |
Self mov'd advance the neck perhaps to meet | P |
The distant head the distant legs the feet | P |
Dreadful to view see thro' the dusky sky | Q |
Fragments of bodies in confusion fly | Q |
To distant regions journeying there to claim | R |
Deserted members and complete the frame | R |
When the world bow'd to Rome's almighty sword | S |
Rome bow'd to Pompey and confess'd her lord | S |
Yet one day lost this deity below | B |
Became the scorn and pity of his foe | B |
His blood a traitor's sacrifice was made | T |
And smok'd indignant on a ruffian's blade | T |
No trumpet's sound no gasping army's yell | B |
Bid with due horror his great soul farewell | B |
Obscure his fall all welt'ring in his gore | U |
His trunk was cast to perish on the shore | U |
While Julius frown'd the bloody monster dead | C |
Who brought the world in his great rival's head | C |
This sever'd head and trunk shall join once more | U |
Tho' realms now rise between and oceans roar | U |
The trumpet's sound each fragrant mote shall hear | V |
Or fix'd in earth or if afloat in air | L |
Obey the signal wafted in the wind | H |
And not one sleeping atom lag behind | H |
So swarming bees that on a summer's day | W |
In airy rings and wild meanders play | W |
Charm'd with the brazen sound their wand'rings end | X |
And gently circling on a bough descend | X |
The body thus renew'd the conscious soul | B |
Which has perhaps been flutt'ring near the pole | B |
Or midst the burning planets wond'ring stray'd | T |
Or hover'd o'er where her pale corpse was laid | T |
Or rather coasted on her final state | Y |
And fear'd or wish'd for her appointed fate | Y |
This soul returning with a constant flame | R |
Now weds for ever her immortal frame | R |
Life which ran down before so high is wound | K |
The springs maintain an everlasting round | K |
Thus a frail model of the work design'd | H |
First takes a copy of the builder's mind | H |
Before the structure firm with lasting oak | Z |
And marble bowels of the solid rock | A2 |
Turns the strong arch and bids the columns rise | B2 |
And bear the lofty palace to the skies | B2 |
The wrongs of time enabled to surpass | C2 |
With bars of adamant and ribs of brass | C2 |
That ancient sacred and illustrious dome | D2 |
Where soon or late fair Albion's heroes come | E2 |
From camps and courts tho' great or wise or just | O |
To feed the worm and moulder into dust | O |
That solemn mansion of the royal dead | C |
Where passing slaves o'er sleeping monarchs tread | C |
Now populous o'erflows a num'rous race | N |
Of rising kings fill all th' extended space | N |
A life well spent not the victorious sword | S |
Awards the crown and styles the greater lord | S |
Nor monuments alone and burial earth | F2 |
Labours with man to this his second birth | F2 |
But where gay palaces in pomp arise | B2 |
And gilded theatres invade the skies | B2 |
Nations shall wake whose unrespected bones | G2 |
Support the pride of their luxurious sons | H2 |
The most magnificent and costly dome | D2 |
Is but an upper chamber to the tomb | I2 |
No spot on earth but has supplied a grave | J2 |
And human skulls the spacious ocean pave | J2 |
All's full of man and at this dreadful turn | K2 |
The swarm shall issue and the hive shall burn | K2 |
Not all at once nor in like manner rise | B2 |
Some lift with pain their slow unwilling eyes | B2 |
Shrink backward from the terror of the light | L2 |
And bless the grave and call for lasting night | L2 |
Others whose long attempted virtue stood | M2 |
Fix'd as a rock and broke the rushing flood | N2 |
Whose firm resolve nor beauty could melt down | O2 |
Nor raging tyrants from their posture frown | O2 |
Such in this day of horrors shall be seen | P2 |
To face the thunders with a godlike mien | P2 |
The planets drop their thoughts are fixt above | Q2 |
The centre shakes their hearts disdain to move | R2 |
An earth dissolving and a heaven thrown wide | S2 |
A yawning gulf and fiends on every side | S2 |
Serene they view impatient of delay | W |
And bless the dawn of everlasting day | W |
Here greatness prostrate falls there strength gives place | N |
Here lazars smile there beauty hides her face | N |
Christians and Jews and Turks and Pagans stand | T2 |
A blended throng one undistinguish'd band | T2 |
Some who perhaps by mutual wounds expir'd | U2 |
With zeal for their distinct persuasions fir'd | V2 |
In mutual friendship their long slumber break | W2 |
And hand in hand their Saviour's love partake | W2 |
But none are flush'd with brighter joy or warm | X2 |
With juster confidence enjoy the storm | X2 |
Than those whose pious bounties unconfin'd | H |
Have made them public fathers of mankind | H |
In that illustrious rank what shining light | L2 |
With such distinguish'd glory fills my sight | L2 |
Bend down my grateful muse that homage show | B |
Which to such worthies thou art proud to owe | B |
Wickham Fox Chichley hail illustrious names | Y2 |
Who to far distant times dispense your beams | Z2 |
Beneath your shades and near your crystal springs | A3 |
I first presum'd to touch the trembling strings | A3 |
All hail thrice honour'd 'Twas your great renown | O2 |
To bless a people and oblige a crown | O2 |
And now you rise eternally to shine | J |
Eternally to drink the rays divine | J |
Indulgent God Oh how shall mortal raise | B3 |
His soul to due returns of grateful praise | B3 |
For bounty so profuse to humankind | H |
Thy wondrous gift of an eternal mind | H |
Shall I who some few years ago was less | C3 |
Than worm or mite or shadow can express | C3 |
Was nothing shall I live when every fire | D3 |
And every star shall languish and expire | E3 |
When earth's no more shall I survive above | Q2 |
And thro' the radiant files of angels move | R2 |
Or as before the throne of God I stand | T2 |
See new worlds rolling from his spacious hand | T2 |
Where our adventures shall perhaps be taught | F3 |
As we now tell how Michael sung or fought | F3 |
All that has being in full concert join | I |
And celebrate the depths of love divine | J |
But oh before this blissful state before | U |
Th' aspiring soul this wondrous height can soar | U |
The Judge descending thunders from afar | G3 |
And all mankind is summon'd to the bar | G3 |
This mighty scene I next presume to draw | H3 |
Attend great Anna with religious awe | I3 |
Expect not here the known successful arts | J3 |
To win attention and command our hearts | J3 |
Fiction be far away let no machine | P2 |
Descending here no fabled god be seen | P2 |
Behold the God of gods indeed descend | X |
And worlds unnumber'd his approach attend | X |
Lo the wide theatre whose ample space | N |
Must entertain the whole of human race | N |
At heaven's all powerful edict is prepar'd | K3 |
And fenc'd around with an immortal guard | L3 |
Tribes provinces dominions worlds o'erflow | W |
The mighty plain and deluge all below | W |
And every age and nation pours along | M3 |
Nimrod and Bourbon mingle in the throng | M3 |
Adam salutes his youngest son no sign | J |
Of all those ages which their births disjoin | J |
How empty learning and how vain is art | N3 |
But as it mends the life and guides the heart | N3 |
What volumes have been swell'd what time been spent | O3 |
To fix a hero's birth day or descent | O3 |
What joy must it now yield what rapture raise | B3 |
To see the glorious race of ancient days | B3 |
To greet those worthies who perhaps have stood | M2 |
Illustrious on record before the flood | N2 |
Alas a nearer care your soul demands | P3 |
C sar unnoted in your presence stands | P3 |
How vast the concourse not in number more | U |
The waves that break on the resounding shore | U |
The leaves that tremble in the shady grove | Q3 |
The lamps that gild the spangled vaults above | Q2 |
Those overwhelming armies whose command | T2 |
Said to one empire fall another stand | T2 |
Whose rear lay wrapt in night while breaking dawn | J |
Rous'd the broad front and call'd the battle on | J |
Great Xerxes' world in arms proud Cann 's field | R3 |
Where Carthage taught victorious Rome to yield | R3 |
Another blow had broke the fates' decree | S3 |
And earth had wanted her fourth monarchy | S3 |
Immortal Blenheim fam'd Ramillia's host | T3 |
They all are here and here they all are lost | F |
Their millions swell to be discern'd in vain | J |
Lost as a billow in th' unbounded main | J |
This echoing voice now rends the yielding air | L |
For judgment judgment sons of men prepare | L |
Earth shakes anew I hear her groans profound | K |
And hell through all her trembling realms resound | K |
Whoe'er thou art thou greatest power of earth | F2 |
Blest with most equal planets at thy birth | F2 |
Whose valour drew the most successful sword | S |
Most realms united in one common lord | S |
Who on the day of triumph saidst Be thine | J |
The skies Jehovah all this world is mine | J |
Dare not to lift thine eye Alas my muse | U3 |
How art thou lost what numbers canst thou choose | U3 |
A sudden blush inflames the waving sky | Q |
And now the crimson curtains open fly | Q |
Lo far within and far above all height | L2 |
Where heaven's great Sov'reign reigns in worlds of light | L2 |
Whence nature he informs and with one ray | W |
Shot from his eye does all her works survey | W |
Creates supports confounds Where time and place | N |
Matter and form and fortune life and grace | N |
Wait humbly at the footstool of their God | V3 |
And move obedient at his awful nod | V3 |
Whence he beholds us vagrant emmets crawl | W |
At random on this air suspended ball | W |
Speck of creation if he pour one breath | W3 |
The bubble breaks and 'tis eternal death | W3 |
Thence issuing I behold but mortal sight | L2 |
Sustains not such a rushing sea of light | L2 |
I see on an empyreal flying throne | J |
Sublimely rais'd heaven's everlasting Son | J |
Crown'd with that majesty which form'd the world | X3 |
And the grand rebel flaming downward hurl'd | X3 |
Virtue dominion praise omnipotence | Y3 |
Support the train of their triumphant prince | Z3 |
A zone beyond the thought of angels bright | L2 |
Around him like the zodiac winds its light | L2 |
Night shades the solemn arches of his brows | A4 |
And in his cheek the purple morning glows | B4 |
Where'er serene he turns propitious eyes | B2 |
Or we expect or find a paradise | C4 |
But if resentment reddens their mild beams | Z2 |
The Eden kindles and the world's in flames | Y2 |
On one hand knowledge shines in purest light | L2 |
On one the sword of justice fiercely bright | L2 |
Now bend the knee in sport present the reed | D4 |
Now tell the scourg'd impostor he shall bleed | D4 |
Thus glorious thro' the courts of heav'n the source | E4 |
Of life and death eternal bends his course | E4 |
Loud thunders round him roll and lightnings play | W |
Th' angelic host is rang'd in bright array | W |
Some touch the string some strike the sounding shell | W |
And mingling voices in rich concert swell | W |
Voices seraphic blest with such a strain | J |
Could Satan hear he were a god again | J |
Triumphant King of Glory Soul of bliss | F4 |
What a stupendous turn of fate is this | F4 |
O whither art thou rais'd above the scorn | J |
And indigence of him in Bethlem born | J |
A needless helpless unaccounted guest | G4 |
And but a second to the fodder'd beast | H4 |
How chang'd from him who meekly prostrate laid | T |
Vouchsaf'd to wash the feet himself had made | T |
From him who was betray'd forsook denied | S2 |
Wept languish'd pray'd bled thirsted groan'd and died | S2 |
Hung pierc'd and bare insulted by the foe | W |
All heaven in tears above earth unconcern'd below | W |
And was't enough to bid the sun retire | E3 |
Why did not nature at thy groan expire | E3 |
I see I hear I feel the pangs divine | J |
The world is vanish'd I am wholly thine | J |
Mistaken Caiaphas Ah which blasphem'd | S2 |
Thou or thy pris'ner which shall be condemn'd | S2 |
Well might'st thou rend thy garments well exclaim | R |
Deep are the horrors of eternal flame | R |
But God is good 'Tis wondrous all Ev'n he | S3 |
Thou gav'st to death shame torture died for thee | S3 |
Now the descending triumph stops its flight | S2 |
From earth full twice a planetary height | S2 |
There all the clouds condens'd two columns raise | B3 |
Distinct with orient veins and golden blaze | B3 |
One fix'd on earth and one in sea and round | S2 |
Its ample foot the swelling billows sound | S2 |
These an immeasurable arch support | S2 |
The grand tribunal of this awful court | S2 |
Sheets of bright azure from the purest sky | Q |
Stream from the crystal arch and round the columns fly | Q |
Death wrapt in chains low at the basis lies | B2 |
And on the point of his own arrow dies | B2 |
Here high enthron'd th' eternal Judge is plac'd | S2 |
With all the grandeur of his godhead grac'd | S2 |
Stars on his robes in beauteous order meet | S2 |
And the sun burns beneath his awful feet | S2 |
Now an archangel eminently bright | S2 |
From off his silver staff of wondrous height | S2 |
Unfurls the Christian flag which waving flies | B2 |
And shuts and opens more than half the skies | B2 |
The cross so strong a red it sheds a stain | J |
Where'er it floats on earth and air and main | J |
Flushes the hill and sets on fire the wood | S2 |
And turns the deep dy'd ocean into blood | S2 |
Oh formidable glory dreadful bright | S2 |
Refulgent torture to the guilty sight | S2 |
Ah turn unwary muse nor dare reveal | W |
What horrid thoughts with the polluted dwell | W |
Say not to make the sun shrink in his beam | I4 |
Dare not affirm they wish it all a dream | I4 |
With or their souls may with their limbs decay | W |
Or God be spoil'd of his eternal sway | W |
But rather if thou know'st the means unfold | S2 |
How they with transport might the scene behold | S2 |
Ah how but by repentance by a mind | S2 |
Quick and severe its own offence to find | S2 |
By tears and groans and never ceasing care | L |
And all the pious violence of prayer | L |
Thus then with fervency till now unknown | J |
I cast my heart before th' eternal throne | J |
In this great temple which the skies surround | S2 |
For homage to its lord a narrow bound | S2 |
O thou whose balance does the mountains weigh | W |
Whose will the wild tumultuous seas obey | W |
Whose breath can turn these watery worlds to flame | R |
That flame to tempest and that tempest tame | R |
Earth's meanest son all trembling prostrate falls | J4 |
And on the boundless of thy goodness calls | J4 |
Oh give the winds all past offence to sweep | M |
To scatter wide or bury in the deep | M |
Thy power my weakness may I ever see | S3 |
And wholly dedicate my soul to thee | S3 |
Reign o'er my will my passions ebb and flow | W |
At thy command nor human motive know | W |
If anger boil let anger be my praise | B3 |
And sin the graceful indignation raise | B3 |
My love be warm to succour the distress'd | S2 |
And lift the burden from the soul oppress'd | S2 |
Oh may my understanding ever read | S2 |
This glorious volume which thy wisdom made | S2 |
Who decks the maiden spring with flow'ry pride | S2 |
Who calls forth summer like a sparkling bride | S2 |
Who joys the mother autumn's bed to crown | J |
And bids old winter lay her honours down | J |
Not the great Ottoman or greater Czar | G3 |
Not Europe's arbitress of peace and war | U |
May sea and land and earth and heaven be join'd | S2 |
To bring th' eternal author to my mind | S2 |
When oceans roar or awful thunders roll | W |
May thoughts of thy dread vengeance shake my soul | W |
When earth's in bloom or planets proudly shine | J |
Adore my heart the majesty divine | J |
Thro' every scene of life or peace or war | U |
Plenty or want thy glory be my care | L |
Shine we in arms or sing beneath our vine | J |
Thine is the vintage and the conquest thine | J |
Thy pleasure points the shaft and bends the bow | K4 |
The cluster blasts or bids it brightly glow | W |
'Tis thou that lead'st our powerful armies forth | L4 |
And giv'st great Anne thy sceptre o'er the north | L4 |
Grant I may ever at the morning ray | W |
Open with prayer the consecrated day | W |
Tune thy great praise and bid my soul arise | B2 |
And with the mounting sun ascend the skies | B2 |
As that advances let my zeal improve | R2 |
And glow with ardour of consummate love | Q2 |
Nor cease at eve but with the setting sun | J |
My endless worship shall be still begun | J |
And oh permit the gloom of solemn night | S2 |
To sacred thought may forcibly invite | S2 |
When this world's shut and awful planets rise | B2 |
Call on our minds and raise them to the skies | B2 |
Compose our souls with a less dazzling sight | S2 |
And show all nature in a milder light | S2 |
How every boisterous thought in calm subsides | M4 |
How the smooth'd spirit into goodness glides | M4 |
O how divine to tread the milky way | W |
To the bright palace of the lord of day | W |
His court admire or for his favour sue | N4 |
Or leagues of friendship with his saints renew | N4 |
Pleas'd to look down and see the world asleep | M |
While I long vigils to its founder keep | M |
Canst thou not shake the centre Oh control | W |
Subdue by force the rebel in my soul | W |
Thou who canst still the raging of the flood | S2 |
Restrain the various tumults of my blood | S2 |
Teach me with equal firmness to sustain | J |
Alluring pleasure and assaulting pain | J |
O may I pant for thee in each desire | D3 |
And with strong faith foment the holy fire | D3 |
Stretch out my soul in hope and grasp the prize | B2 |
Which in eternity's deep bosom lies | B2 |
At the great day of recompense behold | S2 |
Devoid of fear the fatal book unfold | S2 |
Then wafted upward to the blissful seat | S2 |
From age to age my grateful song repeat | S2 |
My light my life my God my Saviour see | S3 |
And rival angels in the praise of thee | S3 |
