Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEFGHIJKLMNO| All night a door floated down the river | A |
| It tried to remember little incidents of pleasure | A |
| from its former life like the time the lovers | B |
| leaned against it kissing for hours | B |
| and whispering those famous words | C |
| Later there were harsh words and a shoe | D |
| was thrown and the door was slammed | E |
| Comings and goings by the thousands | F |
| the early mornings and late nights years years | G |
| O they've got big plans they'll make a bundle | H |

| The moon turned the doorknob just slightly | J |
| burned its fingers and ran | K |
| and still the door said nothing and slept | L |
| At least that's what they like to say | M |
| the little fishes and so on | N |
| Far away a bell rang and then a shot was fired | O |
