Behind The Bars Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

I am a pilgrim far from homeA
A wanderer like MarsB
And thought my wanderings ne'er should comeC
So fixed behind the barsB
-
I left my sunny Southern homeA
Beneath the silver starsB
A northward path began to roamA
Not seeking prison barsB
-
I sought a higher holier lifeD
Which never virtue marsB
But Fate had spun a net of strifeD
For me behind the barsB
-
My mother's lowly thatched roofed cotE
My nobler senses jarsB
And so I seek to aid her lotE
But not behind the barsB
-
'Tis said forsooth the poet learnsF
Through sufferings and warsG
To sing the song which deepest burnsF
Behind the prison barsB
-
Thus I resign myself to FateH
Regardless of her scarsB
For soon she'll open wide the gateH
For me behind the barsB
-
I plead to you my fellow manI
For all who wear the tarsB
To lend what little help you canI
To us behind the barsB
-
O God I breathe my prayer to TheeJ
Who never sinner barsB
Set each immortal spirit freeJ
Behind these prison barsB
