Behind The Bars Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB ABAB DBDB EBEB FGFB HBHB IBIB JBJBI am a pilgrim far from home | A |
A wanderer like Mars | B |
And thought my wanderings ne'er should come | C |
So fixed behind the bars | B |
- | |
I left my sunny Southern home | A |
Beneath the silver stars | B |
A northward path began to roam | A |
Not seeking prison bars | B |
- | |
I sought a higher holier life | D |
Which never virtue mars | B |
But Fate had spun a net of strife | D |
For me behind the bars | B |
- | |
My mother's lowly thatched roofed cot | E |
My nobler senses jars | B |
And so I seek to aid her lot | E |
But not behind the bars | B |
- | |
'Tis said forsooth the poet learns | F |
Through sufferings and wars | G |
To sing the song which deepest burns | F |
Behind the prison bars | B |
- | |
Thus I resign myself to Fate | H |
Regardless of her scars | B |
For soon she'll open wide the gate | H |
For me behind the bars | B |
- | |
I plead to you my fellow man | I |
For all who wear the tars | B |
To lend what little help you can | I |
To us behind the bars | B |
- | |
O God I breathe my prayer to Thee | J |
Who never sinner bars | B |
Set each immortal spirit free | J |
Behind these prison bars | B |
