An Indian PoemA
-
I-
-
She sate upon her DobieB
To watch the Evening StarC
And all the Punkahs as they passedD
Cried 'My how fair you are '-
Around her bower with quivering leavesE
The tall Kamsamahs grewF
And Kitmutgars in wild festoonsE
Hung down from Tchokis blueF
-
II-
-
Below her home the river rolledG
With soft meloobious soundH
Where golden finned Chuprassies swamI
In myriads circling roundH
Above on talles trees remoteJ
Green Ayahs perched aloneK
And all night long the Mussak moan'dL
Its melancholy toneK
-
III-
-
And where the purple Nullahs threwF
Their branches far and wideM
And silvery Goreewallahs flewF
In silence side by sideM
The little Bheesties' twittering cry-
Rose on the fragrant airN
And oft the angry Jampan howledO
Deep in his hateful lairN
-
IV-
-
She sate upon her DobieB
She heard the Nimmak humA
When all at once a cry aroseE
'The Cummerbund is come '-
In vain she fled with open jawsE
The angry monster followedP
And so before assistence cameQ
That Lady Fair was swallowedP
-
VB
-
They sought in vain for even a boneK
Respectfully to buryB
They said 'Hers was a dreadful fate '-
And Echo answered 'Very '-
They nailed her Dobie to the wallR
Where last her form was seenS
And underneath they wrote these wordsE
In yellow blue and greenS
-
Beware ye Fair Ye Fair bewareN
Nor sit out late at nightT
Lest horrid Cummerbunds should comeA
And swallow you outrightT
