Poor Angels Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DEFG HIJK ELAM IEGN IOIP QIRS TU

At this hour the soul floats weightlesslyA
through the city streets speechless and invisibleA
astonished by the smoky blend of grays and goldsB
seeping out of the air the dark half tonesC
-
of dusk suddenly filling the urban skyD
while the body sits listlessly by the windowE
sullen and heavy too exhausted to moveF
too weary to stand up or to lie downG
-
At this hour the soul is like a yellow wingH
slipping through the treetops a little ecstaticI
cloud hovering over the sidewalks calling outJ
to the approaching night Amaze me amaze meK
-
while the body sits glumly by the windowE
listening to the clear summons of the deadL
transparent as glass clairvoyant as crystalA
Some nights it is almost ready to join themM
-
Oh this is a strange unlikely tetheringI
a furious grafting of the quick and the slowE
when the soul flies up the body sinks downG
and all night locked in the same cramped roomN
-
they go on quarreling stubbornly threateningI
to leave each other wordlessly filling the airO
with the sound of a low internal burningI
How long can this bewildering marriage lastP
-
At midnight the soul dreams of a small fireQ
of stars flaming on the other side of the skyI
but the body stares into an empty night sheenR
a hollow eyed darkness Poor luckless angelsS
-
feverish old loves don t separate yetT
Let what rises live with what descendsU
