Saturday morning in late MarchA
I was alone and took a long walkB
though I also carried a bookC
of the Alone which companioned meD
-
The day was clear unnaturally clearE
like a freshly wiped pane of glassF
a window over the waterG
and blue preternaturally blueH
like the sky in a Magritte paintingI
and cold vividly cold so thatJ
you could clap your hands and rememberG
winter which had left a few moments agoK
if you strained you could almost see itL
disappearing over the hills in a black parkaM
Spring was coming but hadn't arrived yetN
I walked on the edge of the parkO
The wind whispered a secret to the treesP
which held their breathQ
and scarcely movedR
On the other side of the streetS
the skyscrapers stood on tiptoeK
-
I walked down to the pier to watchT
the launching of a passenger shipU
Ice had broken up on the riverG
and the water rippled smoothly in blue lightV
The moon was a faint smudgeW
in the clouds a brushstroke an afterthoughtX
in the vacant mind of the skyY
Seagulls materialized out of vaporG
amidst the masts and flagsZ
Don't let our voices die on landA2
they cawed swooping down for fishB2
and then soaring back upwardsC2
-
The kiosks were openingI
and couples moved slowly past themD2
arm in arm festiveE2
Children darted in and out of walkwaysF2
which sprouted with vendorsG2
Voices greeted the airH2
Kites and balloons Handmade signsI2
Voyages to unknown placesJ2
The whole day had the drama of an expectationK2
-
Down at the water the queenly shipU
started moving away from the pierE
Banners flutteredL2
The passengers clustered at the rails on deckM2
I stood with the people on shore and wavedN2
goodbye to the travelersG2
Some were jubilantO2
others were broken heartedP2
I have always been bothQ2
-
Suddenly a great cry went upR2
The ship set sail for the horizonK2
and rumbled into the futureG
but the cry persistedP2
and cut the airH2
like an iron bell ringingI
in an empty churchS2
I looked around the pierE
but everyone else was goneT2
and I was left aloneU2
to peer into the ghostly distanceV2
I had no idea where that ship was goingI
but I felt lucky to see it offW2
and bereft when it disappearedX2
