Rhyme Scheme: A BC AD AE FG HA IJ KL MN OP GQ PR PK ST MU VI EM AW

In Memory of Dennis TurnerA
-
-
A hook shot kisses the rim andB
hangs there helplessly but doesn't dropC
-
and for once our gangly starting centerA
boxes out his man and times his jumpD
-
perfectly gathering the orange leatherA
from the air like a cherished possessionE
-
and spinning around to throw a strikeF
to the outlet who is already shovelingG
-
an underhand pass toward the other guardH
scissoring past a flat footed defenderA
-
who looks stunned and nailed to the floorI
in the wrong direction trying to catch sightJ
-
of a high gliding dribble and a manK
letting the play develop in front of himL
-
in slow motion almost exactlyM
like a coach's drawing on the blackboardN
-
both forwards racing down the courtO
the way that forwards should fanning outP
-
and filling the lanes in tandem movingG
together as brothers passing the ballQ
-
between them without a dribble withoutP
a single bounce hitting the hardwoodR
-
until the guard finally lunges outP
and commits to the wrong manK
-
while the power forward explodes past themS
in a fury taking the ball into the airT
-
by himself now and laying it gentlyM
against the glass for a lay upU
-
but losing his balance in the processV
inexplicably falling hitting the floorI
-
with a wild headlong motionE
for the game he loved like a countryM
-
and swiveling back to see an orange blurA
floating perfectly though the netW
