I said I leave my bit of landA
In khaki they've entwined meB
I go abroad to lend a handA
Said she My love I understandA
I will be true and though we partC
A thousand years you hold my heart'C
The girl I left behind meB
-
I went away to fight the HunsD
No coward thought could bind meB
I sizzled n the tropic sunsD
I faced the bayonets and the gunsD
And when in daring deeds I shoneE
One little woman spurred me onF
The girl I left behind meB
-
Out there in grim GallipoliG
Hard going they assigned meB
I pricked the Turk up from the seaB
I riddled him he punctured meB
And bleeding in my rags I saidC
She'll meet me somewhere if I'm deadC
The girl I left behind meB
-
In France we broke the German's faceD
They tried with gas to blind meB
In mud we bogged from front to baseD
And dirt was ours but not disgraceD
They carved me till I couldn't standC
Said I Now for the Lodden andC
The girl I left behind meB
-
I came ashore and struck the trackH
For dust you scarce could find meB
The dear girl gave no welcome backH
Shed changed her names and state alackH
You've been a time I must say NedC
In finishing your old war SaidC
The girl I left behind meB
-
I flung a song up to the skiesD
For battles gods designed meB
I think of Fifi's laughing eyesD
And Nami dusk but sweet and wiseD
And chortle in my heart to findC
How very far I've left behindC
The girl I left behind meB
