The great men framed the fierce decreesA
Embroiling State with StateB
They bit their thumbs across the seasA
In diplomatic hateB
They lit the pyre whose glare and heatC
Make Hell itself seem coldD
The flames bloomed red above the wheatC
Their wild profusion wreathed the streetC
Then in the smoke and fiery sleetC
The common men took holdD
-
Where Babel was with Bedlam freedE
And wide the gates were flungF
To chaos while the anarch breedE
In all the world gave tongueF
The common men in close arrayG
By mountain plain and seaH
Went outward girded for the frayG
On one dear quest whate'er they payG
In blood and pain the open wayG
To keep for LibertyH
-
The common men who never tireI
Unsightly in the mirkF
Of caking blood and smoke and mireJ
Push forward with their workF
A while in foulest pits entombedK
Resistless still and slowL
Burnt broken stifled seeming doomedK
Past where the flowers of Satan bloomedK
Up gutted hills with shell breath plumedK
The stubborn armies goL
-
Contending in the shattered skyF
In empyrean warsM
The sons of simple men out vieF
God's splendid meteorsN
Where'er the mills of Vulcan roaredK
And blinked against the nightK
Swart shapes with sweat washed eyes haveO
storedK
The clean lean lightnings of the LordK
To be a league long leaping swordK
In this our holy fightK
-
The small men know the burden wellP
The dreadful paths they knowL
With fear and death and torture dwellP
And sup and sleep with woeL
They're riven in the shrapnel gustK
But blind and reeling planQ
Another blow a final thrustK
To subjugate the tyrant's lustK
So bleeding blundering in the dustK
Men fight and die for MANQ
