HELLO that s the whistle be movingA
Wake up don t lie muttering thereB
What language your style is improvingA
It s pleasant to hear you at prayerB
Turn out man and spare us the blessingA
Crib s cut and the tea s on the brewC
You ll have to look slippy in dressingA
For that was the half hour that blewC
-
Half past and the night s simply awfulD
The hut fairly shakes in the stormE
Hang night shifts They shouldn t be lawfulD
I ve only had time to get warmE
I notice the hut s rarely bright andF
The bunk s always cold as a stoneG
Except when I go on at night andF
The half after whistles have blownG
-
Bob built up that fire just to spite meH
The conscienceless son of a swabI
By Jove it would fairly delight meH
To let Hogan be hanged with his jobI
Oh it s easy to preach of contentmentJ
You re eloquent all on the fluteK
Old Nick s everlasting resentmentJ
Plague Dick if he s taken my bootK
-
Great C sar you roasted the liquorL
Whoever it was made the teaH
It s hotter than hell broth and thickerL
Fried bacon again Not for meH
Good night and be hanged Stir up StumpyM
You look very happy and warmE
I ll hoist half the bark off the humpyM
And give you a taste of the stormE
-
We laughed as he went away growlingA
But down where the wind whipped the creekN
The storm like old fury was howlingA
And Fred was on top for the weekN
A devil s own night for the bracemanG
Muttered Con It s a comfort to knowG
All weathers are one to the facemanG
All shifts are alike down belowG
-
We slept and the storm was recedingA
The wind moaned a dirge overheadO
When men brought him broken and bleedingA
And laid him again on the bedO
We saw by the flame burning dimlyH
The gray hue of death on his faceP
The stoker enlightened us grimlyH
No hope He was blown from the braceP
