As men have loved their lovers in times pastA
And sung their wit their virtue and their graceB
So have we loved sweet Justice to the lastA
That now lies here in an unseemly placeB
The child will quit the cradle and grow wiseC
And stare on beauty till his senses drownD
Yet shall be seen no more by mortal eyesC
Such beauty as here walked and here went downD
Like birds that hear the winter crying plainE
Her courtiers leave to seek the clement southF
Many have praised her we alone remainE
To break a fist against the lying mouthF
Of any man who says this was not soG
Though she be dead now as indeed we knowG

Where can the heart be hidden in the groundA
And be at peace and be at peace foreverH
Under the world untroubled by the soundA
Of mortal tears that cease from pouring neverH
Well for the heart by stern compassion harriedA
If death be deeper than the churchmen sayI
Gone from this world indeed what's graveward carriedA
And laid to rest indeed what's laid awayI
Anguish enough while yet the indignant breatherH
Have blood to spurt upon the oppressor's handA
Who would eternal be and hang in etherH
A stuffless ghost above his struggling landA
Retching in vain to render up the groanJ
That is not there being aching dust's aloneJ
